I've lost 74 pounds since May 31. When my doctor put me on it (yes, you heard right, doctor prescribed, folks! But . . . but . . .it's quackery, right?!) I had high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, and the beginning stages of adult-onset diabetes. A couple of months after starting Atkins & exercise, the blood pressure was "fixed", without medication. My resting pulse dropped from 75 to 56 and now hovers in the mid-50s.

I go in December 3 to have my blood checked again. Should be interesting. :D

Now, tell me it's a "fad", "junk science", or "cannot possibly work." ;)

UPDATE -

Checked in with the doctor today. I've lost another 7 pounds, for a total of 81.

My blood pressure has dropped from 180/95 to 110/72.

My resting pulse has dropped from 70 to 56.

Blood work should be in by Friday. :D

Just because it worked for you does not mean it will work for everyone.

Let me get this straight.. you are arguing with me that bread isn't a centuries old food that has miles of supporting evidence that it was baked by early man to defend your fad diet that might work but is one of the most unhealthy life choices that you can do to yourself. Cut out fruits, veggies, and bread in place of................a huge hunk of charred flesh. Dieting should be a life change, not a fad diet that millions of people blindly follow because it yields results. I can cut my arm off to solve the fact that it has cancer on it, but it doesn't make sense does it. If you want to be healthy, diet, exercise, and eat natural foods.

Edit: I am happy for your accomplishments, it's great that you're on your way, but you really should consider doing something else with your diet, because it's honestly not healthy to cut out those foods in place of fatty foods. I am also not really wanting to get into a giant Atkins debate, because it's a tired old argument that has no winners.

You obviously have no clue about how Atkins works, so what's the point in debating you? Despite rumors to the contrary, you don't eat big greasy cheeseburgers three meals a day on Atkins. For breakfast I usually eat a couple of breakfast bars, for lunch, I'll have a big salad, and for dinner, some grilled chicken, a lean steak, maybe even fish, and some vegetables. For a snack, I really like macadamia nuts and beef jerky, and I drink tons of water. How is that unnatural?

Actually, I do know what I am talking about, but assuming is fun. I did it for 3 months. I know that you are not allowed to eat very many fruits because of excessive sugar. I also know that some vegetables are off limits too. As well as bread. Cutting these foods out of your life isn't the answer X-Man.

Did you read the book? The limitation on fruit is limited to the initial period, during which you train your body to burn protein for energy rather than carbohydrates. I can eat fruit if I choose to. Again, if you're not informed, why try to argue?

...but losing that weight through a regular healthy diet and exericse you'd see mostly the same results.

It is the weight loss(and exercise) that helped out your resting pulse rate/bloodpressure.

I've tried tons of diets before. This is the only one I've done where I actually felt like I had the energy to exercise and wasn't starving all of the time.

I don't argue that Atkins doesn't produce results; I don't think anybody does. I do have a problem not knowing what long-term effects it has.

It works for the short term, but not for the long
End of thread. ;)

Stay on atkins and check out your colon in 10 years.

Isn't the atkins diet really just a sugar (or glucose) controlling diet; it helps you regualte the amount of sugar your body intakes for use as energy? How is controlling how much sugar you eat unhealthy?

Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner. The biggest change in my diet is the absence of pizza, beer, Starbucks cappucinos, and Vanilla Coke. How exactly is that unnatural? Oh wait, CR works for Starbucks, maybe he's just worried about the sudden huge decline of sales at the Flagstaff store. :D

Got any links to back that up, or just FUD?

That's great X-Man.

Atkins didn't work for me, but a almost no bread diet called the fatflush plan did.

BTW-man's predispositions to digest certain foods predates the making of bread by hundreds of thousands of years. Imagine you're a caveman walking along hungry and you decide to eat a grain, it would be as tasty as eating rocks and unless you planted a bunch in one spot wouldn't do much to help you out.

BTW,BTW--my wife is the master-baker ;)

Somebody else saw Lewis Black on The Daily Show the other night. Hilarious bit about Atkins and Dr.Phil.
