I don't know if this was posted, but www.netflix.com for 20 bucks a month you can get all you can rent dvd movies. Basically you give them a list what you want they send you 3 movies and when you send a movie back they send you the next one from your list. No shipping payment they come with prepaid envelopes...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there any way to share rentals? Like pool resources between people. Be cool if there was an organized way besides standing outside a blockbuster and waiting for someoen to return a movie and ask if you can see it and return it for them the next day....

----------------------------------------------------------------
1 Apparently there is a coupon code for netflix to give you a free month,
2 To get more DVDs faster declare sent ones lost and they will send you next one on list and when they receive lost one they will unlost it.

3 Apparently there is some deal for blockbuster where get 20 dvd rentals for 30 bucks a month??? If anyone knows about it post.

old news.

Besides, at 3 at a time, you'll be lucky to get 6 in a month, and that's if you try.

Also, good luck getting "hot" titles as they're always out-of-stock on those.

My $.02 (as a former netflix subsriber before they became over-popular...)

6 a month?

I just signed up on Friday, got my movies on Tues (shipped sat...got 1st business day).

My friend has it..he sends them back and receives the next one within about 3-4 days...which isnt' bad at all. With that logic you should be able to rent 12-20 a month. Quit being a cynical thread crapper.

MrEnigma,
He isn't being cynical. Most of us that have been here more than a few months have tried this. I maxed out at 6 per month because the DVDs that I send back mysteriously take a while to get there. The downside is that at that rate you barely break even, and then you feel obligated to watch the damn things. The upside is that if you REALLY want to watch a ton of DVDs it is POSSIBLE, but good luck getting it to work consistently. This is great for people who cannot find the time to go to store, however. Then there is the problem of renting DVDs worth the time. But, by all means let us know in 6 months how you did average-wise.

Sure..

I have a friend who says it takes about 3 days to process them..I get the DVD's within a business day..and they receive within a business day..although there is a processing time on them (like 2-3 days). I'm in Minneapolis, and they have a place right in minneapolis..so it's all good. Hopefully I dont' get screwed..and they aren't really stupid about it.

The farther east you get, the slower the service is, because the DVD's come standard mail. For people near california, this is a killer deal, because you could rent a whole lot of movies in a month's time. I live in Ohio, and as a netflix customer 18 months ago, we'd get 6 a month, max. Say, on the 1st, we'd order 3 movies. They'd get to us on the 6th, we'd mail them out on the 9th after watching them all. Netflix gets them on the 15th and mails us out three more. We get those on the 21st, mail them back on the 24th, netflix gets them on the 30th. 6 DVDs in a month, and that was about average for us.

Uh...he's talking generally.

It works well for a select few lucky enough to live close to a distribution center. It's not like there's one every 50 miles or something. You're fortunate, that's not the norm for everyone.

Is that reasonable to say?

I have no problems with netflix. couple days to get here and a couple to send back. I've always gotten my selection also. If I get movies quickly then everyone else should also. I think netflix is in California and I'm in PA, so thats a distance and it only takes a couple days.

Netflix is great if you are close to a distribution center and want to see movies on DVD you can't get at Blockbuster.

But for me, I would rather spend the $20 and get 30 DVDs in 30 days at Blockbuster since I live so close.

took 4-5 days for my dvds to get back to them, and then another couple days to get the new ones... if they were in stock. If you only want to see new hot releases, you'll spend a lot of time waiting, and if you want to watch a movie, it's a lot quicker to get it from blockbuster, rather than wait.

I've had NetFlix for just over a month.

Rented 16 movies in 1 month for $21 (incl. tax) on their 3 at a time deal.

That was being vigilant, but not hyper, about promptly returning viewed DVDs.
Guess I outta' try being hyper for a week an see what the maximum churn rate could be.

My return address is a PO BOX at my regional USPS mail processing center.
I'm sure that helps.

For me, having USPS transport eliminates the run / stop at the video store.
And the First Class postage and mailer envelopes to / from are included in the $21.

BlockBuster has some sorta' 30 movies for $20 deal???
Even so, unless they were on my daily path, I probably wouldn't do it?

Netflix is a great service if you live in the Bay Area.

The turn around time is usually two days, and sometimes only one day.

Uhhm, please post more! THIS is a hot deal! :)

Btw, Netflix has a HORRIBLE selection of foreign films. Lots of titles but few good ones.

I don't see it on their website.....maybe it's over, I dunno. Try calling your local Blockbuster and see if they are still running the promotion. Good luck :)

I don't know their service has definitely gone downhill for me and I'm thinking of cancelling. For instance I sent the movies off back to them early on the 23rd, and just today the 29th did they send me an email saying they received them. They won't send the new movies out today but they will likely on the 30th or if they're slow like sometimes the 31st. Then another 3-5(up to 7 if you believe Netflix which I dont) days to get the movies to me and thats a pretty long turn-around.
Personally I think they fudge on the return dates, I dont think theres anyway that it too 6 full days for those movies to get to them.

So the day total for this time is minimum of 12 days and might be up to 16 days.

You know with Netflix you used to be able to click a button 3 days after you sent the movies to them and they would that day ship out your new selections to you. Since they did away with that option everything seems to be slowing down and sucking.

If I can't get 3 swaps in a month next month, I'm going to cancel.

NetFlix just raised around $80 million in an IPO so maybe they'll spend a few of those dollars to improve distribution. Although it's very possible they'll just spend the cash on pampering the CEO. :D

I happen to live in Bay Area and I tried their 2 week trial previously. I manage to rent 6 movies in 2 weeks, so that means I can do 12 in amonth. This is where DVD-ripping helps. I basically ripped the DVD to my hard drive and then returned it right away. My HTPC doesnt have SPDIF-out yet, but im working on it. However, this was mostly a dvd-ripping experiment. I dont have time to watch that many movies. The most I would consider renting anyways is once a week, they dont have that option yet.

I've used nextflix for over a year and sometime I can watch a lot of movies per month and sometimes I watch less. For me, the beauty is that I know I won't spend more than 20 bucks a month for my movie rentals. If I add up all the damned late fees I paid blockbuster over the last ten years, netflix is very much worth it to me. (I was never very good at "timely" returns). Its probably not such a great deal if you are terrificially responsible in returning your blockbuster rentals though.

On another note, netflix used to let you get an early shipment of your next dvd if the last dvd you shipped took longer than X days (5 i think). I used it a few times when and it worked well. Its too bad they got rid of this.

vladgur,

FWIW, the minimum service / deal:

Netflix Service Lite (2 out)
Affordable, convenient and perfect for the occasional renter, our Lite Program lets you have 2 movies out at a time for a flat monthly fee of $13.95.

My wife signed us up for NetFlix and so far, we've been very happy with it. We are getting a new movie every two or three days. I like the service. Our family has the WORST time getting rentals back to Blockbuster on time. The late fees were killing me. This is a nice service.

We give it "Two Thumbs Up!"

Glendor...
