I have no clue what this means and would appreciate some enlightenment. What do the letters and numbers mean - "SL6EF". Also what does "C1 stepping, week 39" indicate?

Pentium 4 2.4B, SL6EF, C1 stepping, week 39?

SL6EF - This is the chip's model number. This helps identify which chip you have. At the Intel website you can put in that code into their "Spec Finder" application and find out all kinds of technical information about your chip such as voltages, packaging, FSB, cache, etc.

C1 - This is the chip's revision number. A being the first stepping, B the second, C the third. Subrevisions are usually denoted as 0, 1, 2, etc...

Week 39 - This is the week during a particular year in which the chip was manufactured. Week 39 would be like Sept/Oct. There usually is a year code that goes along with this week code, 02 for 2002 or 03 for 2003.

So you mean it is what's shipping now? Also would the P4 2.53 be the same rev? Also I have read that the latest rev of P4's are much better for o/c but what makes them better? Better manufacturing?
 
most likely a more refined process of manufactureing
also, they added 0.025v to the core..maybe they changed a couple things...added morelayers...whatever...i dont know for sure lol

not all of the p4's are shipping with the C1 revision....sometimes you get an older revision
you can tell which revision it is from the SLxxx code using this

most likely a 2.53 would also be the C1 revision....but why spend more money when you can oc to 2.53 rather easily lol

Thanks for the link Champ! My question then is if a 2.4 will overclock to a 2.53 and much higher from what I have seen. Then wouldn't you be better off with a 2.53 for an extra $40 that will clock even higher and better?
 
they will both top out around the same speed from what i've seen

sometiems 2.4b pulls ahead...

id rather save the 40 bux and get a 2.4b and see how far it gets on stock heatsink WITHOUT the pad.....dont use the pad if you plan on ocing if you plan on using the stock heatsink...use like as2/as3 or something similar.....or another aftermarket heatsink altogether

From a non-overclocking standpoint, the C stepping is better than A because problems with the A revision have been fixed. From an overclocking standpoint, it is really hard to say which is better. Chips vary too much with their overclocking abilities to really draw any solid conclusions. It's usually just luck of the draw!

Thanks guys I really appreciate all the good info and advice! What is the difference between the 2.4 and the 2.4b? I notice on newegg that the 2.4b is $194 and the non b version is $197. Also Champ you said don't use the pad. I am assuming this is the retail supplied pad that goes between the CPU and HSF? Is Arctic Silver 3 better than 2? I didn't know there was different values of AS?

Can you guys recommend some links to overclocking tutorials and info?

Sorry for all the questions but I am getting myself schooled and it's feelin kinda nice! 😀 I have been outta the hardware loop for a while and things have changed a bit.

yeah im talkin about the heat transfer pad thing that intel proviedes onthe bottom ofthe stock heatsink - dont use it lol

theres very little diff between as2/as3 afaik
its just as2 came out before as3....and as3 is more widely available nowadays lol
if you have as2, i dont see any reason to chuck it an get as3...its pretty much the same thing

2.4 non b is most likely the chip with only a 400mhz FSB. 2.4B is running on a 533mhz FSB. Get the 2.4B 😀
