Damn memory...!

It appears to have the extra chips that denote registered memory.
But it doesn't work on my motherboards...

I wonder where it does work??

Kwad,

A Registered DIMM will look obviously different. It will have two or three smaller chips (about half the height and width of a RAM chip) on the DIMM. I have four IBM Netfinity 5500 servers. Three are M10's with Xeon processors that have registered DIMMs (RDIMM) and one has plain unregistered ECC DIMMs, so I have seen quite a few registered DIMMs. If your memory looks like a normal DIMM with one extra RAM chip per populated side, then it is just ECC.

Anyway, it shouldn't be hard to notice the extra chips.

Good Luck.

So I got around to testing this in a Gateway 6400 today.
As I expected, no go. I got two different types of sticks.
One type has 18 Micron branded memory chips on the stick (high
density). That doesn't work. The other type has a bazillion
(or so) much smaller, unbranded memory chips on it. Should be
low density. That doesn't work, either.

So I guess I need to send the stuff back. When I was ordering,
I told the guy I was buying for a Gateway 6400 and he didn't
say much of anything except "OK". I would take that as indication
that they approved the memory for a Gateway 6400. Of course, when
I try to return it they're sure to say "we never recommended it
for a 6400" and charge me some Gawdawful restocking fee, if they
even take it...We'll see...

Finally got my 512MB stick but they messed up my order and sent a pc100 case2 ECC RAM instead of a pc133. However, the invoice states: PC133 ECC Registered SDRAM Gateway 6400. Having not received my gateway server so I put this RAM in my Abit kt7 motherboard and it works fine at 100mhz case 2. If I crank up the memory to 133mhz the machine won't even boot up. KT7 never supports ECC so I guess it was just treated as a non-registerd RAM. By the way, there are 18 micron chips on each side of this tall RAM. Can any one tell me if I can overclock the ECC pc100 to pc133? I guess I have to return it if it is no good for Gateway 6400 and no good for kt7 at 133mhz.

Got the memory. It has micron chip on it and was a ecc + buufer.
I do not receive gateway 6400 yet. I try it on IBM Netfinity 5500
and it does not work.

Trust me: It's NOT going to work on the 6400. I have the 6400.
I have this memory. They are not good friends.

I am not sure what motherboard this memory might actually work
on, to be honest.

Any one got the RMA # for return yet? It took me one hour on hold and got hung up when someone at the RMA picked up the phone. I called Paul up later and left a message. No return call yet. Will try again Monday.

I try these memory on my MSI-694D Pro.
MSI-694 did boots up but it said the
memory was PC66. I'm not sure MSI-694
report a right bus speed.
I will find out later.

PC66? That would explain why this f##!!!??!!!ing memory doesn't
work on ANY motherboard I've tried (all motherboards that require
PC133).

Can you, or anyone else who has this memory, confirm/deny that
it's not PC133?

I seriously doubt this is registered memory, if it was it shouldn't be recognized on most boards. If I'm not mistaken, the board has to specifically support registered memory for it to work where ECC can just be disabled. I would send it back and pick up some reliable memory, or at least from a reputable dealer- check Mushkin for more the 256MB IBM chips, I picked up four of those and have heard they work great with the 6400's. If I'm wrong about the registered stuff, someone please correct me-

Didn't someone say this memory was VCM133 earlier in the discussion? If so, that could be the problem. I have don't know much about VCM, but my mobo takes it and I have a chip on the way. (I'm starting to wonder after reading the feedback  ) I have an ASUS A7V - has anyone tried this in a MOBO that supports VCM133?

FYI, they supposedly have a lunch special sale going on now. The 256 megs PC133 ECC Registered is $48.

Anyone come to the bottom of the PC66 issue? Is this memory
PC66, PC100, PC133 or what? All I know is it doesn't work
in any of my motherboards!

Who gives a $hit memoryguy... it is so stupid, pathetic, and entirely immature of you to come in here and start talking in this manner... the fact that you are selling them for about 40% below the cheapest elseware should raise red flags at both poles.. and furthemore at ~22 percent the price of a name brand stick!!! you must be flushing inventory or selling bad products... as we all know the product would cost you far more then then your sale price
