First post, Hope you like it.

Coast to coast memory sells this stick. You won't find it on the website, but call 1800 4memory.
I talked to paul, at extension 728

Am on hold with Paul now, waiting for him to finish up with another customer. Will post memory specs when I get through.

I talked to Paul at the number listed on the first post and got this info:

Generic 512MB Registered ECC SDRAM 168pin
PC133 - $55
PC100 - $55

The Gateway 6400 requires Registered ECC memory; the P3-933 that shipped with it is PC133.

The offer is available not just through Paul, so if you can't reach Paul after a few minutes (I waited about 3 minutes on hold), you can call back and try the next available CSR.

UPDATE: D'OH! I forgot to ask about shipping! I didn't order any because I have a Tyan S1837 board that is *extremely* picky about the kind of memory put into it. Since I already have 512MB in it and I don't really need more, I didn't order any of this generic mem. I'm thinking about ordering a couple anyways; it might not be generic in the sense of "no-name", it might be generic in the sense of "we bought a bunch of overstock and don't know what it is".

RTFM. If your board can take ECC and Registered memory, it will work. You *can't* mix registered and non-registered memory, but at this price you could afford to buy 2 x 512MB and replace what you already have.

Here's the Fine Manual for your motherboard: Iwill KK266 Manual

UPDATE: Actually, I went and read the Not-So-Fine Manual and it says unbuffered only. Registered memory has buffers, so I'm fairly sure this won't work in your Iwill KK266.

idgaf13, Yes I bought a 128MB sodimm from them 11 months ago for a new laptop. If your in the San Diego area, they have a counter in their facility, you can pick it up there. I only wish the price was what it is now, then I paid $137. BTW if you're in CA you'll pay high CA tax.

This looks pretty damn hot! How long will this deal last? How did you find out about it? Has anyone confirmed shipping cost yet? What about compatibility with the 6400 server? My guess is that it shouldn't have a problem, I doubt the Asus board that's in it will be that picky. I wish I have my servers here now, but as of right now they haven't been shipped out yet. I would feel more comfortable if I can wait til I get their confirmation and then buy this stuff. This is an excellent excellent price! Crucial sells 512MB Registered ECC PC133 for $187 plus tax.

Just ordered. This is RED HOT if the memory is as advertised.
The salesperson I talked to said it's generic memory, new, not
system pulls.

I didn't know the generic makers were making ecc registered memory,
but I guess they are...

Shipping is around $7 for USPS, $18 for two day, $22 for overnight
(or something like that). That's total shipping, not per stick.
If you buy more than 1-2, they'll
insist on two day or overnight...Still very hot even with
those shipping costs factored in.

nomind, did you know what part number you bought - does it match the one for the 512mb module on my previous post?

Coast to Coast memory is around 10 minutes from my house, I've bought from them before, very reputable seller!

I was told (2:00 PM CST, 6-15-2001) by Keith at C2C, that they are out of the $55 RAM... 512MB ECC Registered modules are now $299.

you snooze you looze! Gotta remember to check "hot deals" every 15 minutes or so. :D

Yep, I called Paul back to order some (just to see if it would work with my Tyan board) and they've sold all 200 they had in stock. That was quick!

I think that if it's standard PC133 registered ECC sdram, it
should work in any *RECENT* motherboard. Older motherboards
sometimes have issues with chip density, but newer boards
should not...

I can't say for sure, but I suspect that the guy who said
it won't work with a 6400 didn't really know what he was talking
about...

There's a lot of disinformation out there about ECC registered
memory. Retailers are wary of the stuff because a lot of people
buy it and then discover it won't work on their motherboard.
Only a fairly limited number of motherboards (especially
older motherboards) support ECC registered memory--mostly
motherboards of the server variety...

I think they just make sure incase, the memory does not work. They
can charge you restocking fee when your return it.

rgmills:

That's a good price if shipping is reasonable...

Note that 256Mb dimms are valuable for older motherboards
like the BX- based boards. 4 x 256Mb is the only way to get
a Gb of memory on these boards...and for 256Mb sticks, usually
ECC/registered is required.
