On my rig I ran 3dmark the old one and @ 2.4Ghz I got about 15k score.

Then I ran it with 3760Mhz and the score I got was pretty much the same.

I run BlackOps with 2.4Ghz and it takes up on avg 30 to 70 percent of CPU power. Then I ran it @ 3760Mhz and once again it used 30 to 70 percent CPU power and the FPS was the same.

Same goes for my DAW. It uses avg 30 percent and when I render it uses about 67 percent.

What does all of the above mean ? It means there is no reason for a CPU upgrade any time soon.

To all owners of quad core systems don't get excited about sandy bridge and buy a new CPU, you wont see a difference.

My next CPU and your next CPU is the i9 core with 12 cores and with HT 24 logical cores. enuff said. Stop obsessing about upgrading your quad CPU as its pointless until we see more cores and 22nm die. This will happen in 2012 to 2013. Im safe and so are you until 2013 when the i9 core comes out with 12 cores 24 with HT on. Thanks

LOL, you know black ops can run on like a 9500GT with a single core CPU right? You're using the wrong game to benchmark anything buddy.

I called this one a mile out. My comp is great. Won't be upgrading for a while. Maybe I'll get a better gpu but I don't need it.

To me this is why I think it's silly for someone to buy a dual these days. Why not get a CPU you know you won't need to upgrade?

I feel pretty much the same but I don't even think 12-24 cores will really help. Most apps are still single threaded and that doesn't seem to be changing very quickly either. The truth is that beyond my gaming rig, I use machines that are dual core laptop class CPU powered. I never feel they are underpowered. SSD in all of them and that takes care of all my performance related issues. 6 cores at 5Ghz isn't really exciting beyond saying that you have it.

Your 8800GT is holding back your processor.

Really you are right. For you a CPU upgrade wouldn't make any sense at all from a performance standpoint.

Once I see my CPU usage at 100 percent, Then I will upgrade CPUl. Thank you and gg and gb and gl

Listen to what everyone here is saying. You are maxed because you need to upgrade your video card. Once you do that, you will see that your CPU is holding you back.

I have games where I can run my Phenom II X4 @ 1.8Ghz or 3.6Ghz and see basically identical performance, but here is the catch. I"m on a 4670, severe bottleneck in many games.

I also see 100% cpu usage on a regular basis, of course I've got software that I use that can actually utilize my processors cores, I don't just game with an out dated gpu.

He's on a GTX 460 1 GB the 8800GT is his physX card.

EDIT: No it seems like he has removed the GTX 460 from his sig, weird.

I noticed an improvement in load times and responsiveness, when I went from 36GB Raptor to the X25-M SSD. I noticed similar or better improvement when the CPU was upgraded from Core 2 to Core i5. Maybe you need to add an SSD to your setup, perhaps the CPU gain could be larger.

And how's 12 cores and 24 logical cores going to help you in games when current games don't even load 4 cores properly? If you don't see improvement with 50% more clocks you won't see improvement with 3x cores.

LOL something is really wrong with this picture.

Every CPU I own goes right to 100% when I render.

Try real applications next time! :D

I am still upgrading my i5 750 to a SB i7 2600K as soon as they hit the shelves, dispite this very well thought out, and lucid post.

"All Quad Core users. Must read!"

I'm very happy with my quad and plan to keep it for a long time, so why must I read?

Try loading a SC2 level with 100+ enemies on screen, and see how your Q6600 fares. ;)

Even at 3.7GHz you'd be struggling to match a stock 2.66GHz i5 750. SB will be around TWICE as fast as a Q6600 in CPU bound games. Sooner or later, you'll have to get with the times. ;)

that game is horribly coded though. It uses at MOST 2 threads.
Tell me, if there's 100 enemies on the screen, why can't the engine scale to 100 cores?
They dropped the ball.

Besides, SC2 is a far cry from the fun days of SC1. Find another game that requires a 4Ghz core i7 to play smoothly and I'll give you 15 I can play smoothly on an 3+ghz Phenom 2 quad core.

It's funny that you're talking about how there's no need to upgrade your CPU when you're running an 8800GT.

This is sound advice for YOU but not everyone.

Exactly.
And who else renders? Not I, not most people.
What she is saying is, ONE application or game doesn't cover EVERYTHING a user can do so don't base your decision off of ONE thing! I know I have a 980x and I can max it completely out quite often with some work apps. Now, when I play freecell it's hardly used. Would I tell everyone don't upgrade because freecell plays just fine like the OP here did? No.
