E.bay prices on the PS2 have dropped quite a bit. But I assume they will rise again for the Christmas season!

I think the most sensible place to go will be bestbuy then probably kmart and walmart that kind of stores.
Since they don't have take preorder, chances are higher.

488 price for Sony is 100% BS. This is just another way Sony is trying to make demand, tell people they are getting more then they pay for. The second thing is retail markup on these machines is 50%, not 5 10 bucks.

Um, no. All of those systems DID cost Sony $488 apiece to produce and ship to all of the stores. Why is that so hard to believe? This is certainly not the first time a console has sold for a loss. The companies make their money on the games, not the consoles themselves.

I talked to one of the lackys at Wal-Mart, and he said that they have no idea when they get their PS2's in, but he knows that they will get more in before Christmas.

So call your local Wal-Mart at 5AM every morning and you are guaranteed to score before Christmas!

OFF TOPIC:
I haven't seen the PS2 go for much less than $600 on FleaBay. So if you DON'T sell your PS2, you are throwing $300 in the trash can. I stood in line for 6 hours to get a PS2 for FleaBaying. DOUBLED MY MONEY IN THREE DAYS!!!

You are GUARANTEED PROFIT if you sell your PS2 in these early stages. If this doesn't qualify as the hot deal of the year, I don't know what does.

Shimo:
I share office space with a friend who owns a video game store. He was required to buy 15 games for each PS2 he purchased, and the price of the systems was $295. To this day, we buy Playstations for his shop from online vendors when coupons are available, as the normal wholesale cost on the original or PSOne system is still $95. The money is in the software - Nintendo was the first to realize this and referred to their system as a trojan horse.

Shimo:
first of all, you don't know what you're talking about. Sony did not "create a demand" by lowering how many they could sell. They got screwed by one of their manufacturers. Their plant in Nagasaki promised sony to produce 1,000,000 PS2's a month, but have only been able to make about 100,000 a month, they screwed sony over hardcore. DOn't you think the 1,000,000 they originially had would have sold out too?? hello??? people would still have bought all the playstations theyt could.

secondly, EVERY game console sells for less than it costs to be manufactured. That is why video game companies have to get licences from the console (which is why nintendo has like NO games). When they get a licence, they promise to pay the manufacturer royalties on the games that sell. The video game companies prefer this, because by paying royalties, it decreases the price of the system, so more people can get systems. The more people that get systems, the larger the potential market for the video game.

thirdly, I agree that the playstation 2 is a dissappointment. I mean, what the hell did you expect. You paid $600 for a $300 video game system. It's a video game system, not a personal slave. Also, the games all suck right now. when dreamcast came out, they had sucky games too, give the PS2 a year to get games, and they'll kick dreamcasts's a$$ (final fantasy X and final fantasy XI will be out in the next year)

think before you post... DUH

MoRRiS: You also have it wrong. The component shortage is in house (Graphic Synthesizer), not one of their 'manufacturers'. Sony made the mistake and now they are paying for it. They don't expect to be running at full capacity until next March.

i have to disagree with morris on ps2 kicking dreamcasts ass in a year..
Dreamcast will have like 100 games online playable by this time next year, maybe more! and ps2 will just be getting a few out. I feel that both the PS2 and Dreamcast will be even par next year, and the following year in 2002 at this time, ps2 will dominate sega. But, XBOX, and Gamecube will be out then, so all gamers will be in heaven anyways...so who really cares...
anyways, dreamcast rocks..
ps2 slighty rocks....
next year, both will really rock

DC launch games didn't suck at all. Soul Calibur, NFL2k, Sonic (arguable), Powerstone, House of the Dead 2, ...

I'd argue that the games for DC were actually better early and have since been somewhat poor in quality.

Insoniac, YOU are wrong, get it right.
Sony, when seeing demand in japan still high, and needing to fill the demand in the united states hired outside manufacturers (in Nagasaki, I forget their name) to produce their graphics synthisizer.

the manufacturer in nagasaki promise 1 million/month... .but when they started, could 9only get 100,000/month out.

Look up your info first.

Details for those who are interested:
The plant in nagasaki was actually honed for building the graphics synthesizer with a .18 micron manufacturing process--a smaller chipsize than the kobuku plant (Sony's main plant--where all the 4 million japanese units were made at .25 micron process). This means that the graphics chip was physically smaller for the chips planned to be sent to the US. This meant that the boards sent to the US actually were physically different, and they couldn't put the japanese chip on the boards. But when they could only churn out 100,000 chips instead of the 1,000,000, sony was in big trouble. Sony spent millions of dollars for it's fans in the US to retrofit the Kobuku plant to be able to use the .18 micron manufacturing process so that the chips could be made for the US. systems. Sony's doing the best it can, and currently, they're looking into the problem at the nagasaki plant so that they can hopefully resume production at where they intended (they haven't nailed down the problem yet, so they set the long term date of march for fixing the problem... there is a chance they could fix it sooner). Check my information out, trust me.

youmamaisugly, PS2 is already scheduled to have 100 games out in the next 15 months.

by christmas, PS2 will have 50.

Dreamcast had under 20 for the first month of it's release, some of them were good. But with the PS2, you can name some good ones too- SSX, DOA:2 Hardcore, TTT, Summoner (argueably), Smugglers Run...

Dreamcast had games, but not at it's release. YOu have to remember, PS2 has hardly been out a week, and there are already post-launch games out. (in a week, PS2 will have over 30 games out)... Dreamcast was much slower at getting games out.

I used to work at a Best Buy and the store I worked at usually got trucks in on Tues and Thurs night. Merchandising would then stock the items that night so we usually had new items up on Weds and Fridays.

Hmmm....if you still want a PS2, go with jimmygates advice...I'd try best buy right when they open, they have one of the bigger deals with sony so you're odds are better with them than smaller chains.

My roommate is unloading a truck here at a mid-Michigan bb as I write this...good luck.

Has anyone actually gotten a ps2 from one of Sony's supposed weekly shipments to b&m's after the initial release?

I didn't get one (I've got a job) but supposedly, here in Milwaukee,
the Best Buy's have recieved 3 shipments so far.
(Initial, ?? and this morning)

Right now, I'd only buy one to sell it. Remember, it's only a game, and
there will be more.
