From the articles I have read these are re-badged Lexmark printers. Looks like Dell is trying to get a piece of the lucrative ink and toner market.

Here is a review on this printer, the article suggests is looks The Lexmark X5150

Maybe lexmark is making oem printers for dell. This printer can also fax with the help of a pc as well just like the lexmark.

The real question is, "Can I get cartridges from anyone other than Dell?".

The money in printers is all in the refills. Lexmark has some of the most
expensive refills around.

From the review posted above, it appears that only Dell cartridges will
work, not Lexmark, and that I must get the refills from Dell. Dell wants
$30 for the black cartridge, and $35 for the color.

No thanks. My Epson 880 still works fine, and I get refills for about $3 each.

I would not even consider purchasing one of these if the refills are going to be
much more expensive then the generic replacements I can get for Canons or Epsons.

The word is that the cartridges will be "comparably priced" with the competition. Dell is shooting for convenience, though, because the software will monitor the ink/toner levels and when it gets close enough to empty it will offer you a link to order more. Clicking the order button will send your info directly to Dell's order processing complete with the model number of the printer so there's no having to deal with figuring out which ink/toner to order. Then Dell will ship it to you and include a pre-paid mailer to send back the emtpy.

I don't think HP has anything to worry about. ;)

I get refills on EBAY. There are several reputable sellers that have feedback in the thousands.
You have to watch the shipping costs, but if you buy 3 at a time (like I do), the shipping is
much more reasonable.

Lexmark printers are known for being ink hogs, they are among the most expensive to operate.

Dells are Lexmarks. Lexmark is part of IBM. IBM vs. HP? Interesting.

We use Lexmark at work. They aren't bad all things considered, but calling support is always a nightmare. The first person you talk to is a receptionist that doesn't tell you that. So you explain everything, they create a ticket, and route you to the appropriate part of support, where you have to restate the issue. Then, if they managed to screw up the first time, they'll transfer you again, and you explain everything again. Did I mention I use a Brother at home ;)

Will be interesting to see how these work out. These printers are in a good price range as far as stacking your orders so that you can use coupons...

In case anyone Win98, WinNT, or WinME users out there are thinking about this, the specs only say WinXP/2K only.

Lexmark WAS the printer part of IBM. It was cut loose years ago.
Lexmark is now a publicly traded company. HP and IBM compete on many
fronts, all types of PCs, Unix servers, services, etc. They don't compete
in the printer business, however.

Seriously. Love my 880. I wish I had another 880 incase the one I have breaks. $30 for ink? What the hell is that?

What I really want is one of those All-In-One printers that copies and stuff, but that has cheap ink at Megatoners.com.

Yes, long live the 880 with cheap ink. I think I got mine from a Dell deal here now that I think about it.

I get my HP 1100/1200/5L/6L/3200 cartridges from Office Depot using their $15 off $50 coupon which ofcourse comes with free shipping. Can't find a better place and a better product. ;)

I like lexmark printers, but in all fairness, i've never had a lexmark inkjet -- i use a Lexmark Optra R+ laser at home.

This brings up an interesting point. Dell is using Lexmark for inkjets, but not for their Laser technology. Rumor is Dell is look at better competitors for the Laser solution, can't wait to see who they end up picking. The most competitive low end color laser to HP right now is the Minolta 2200DL; cheaper, faster and better quality prints then the HP 2500n (from PC Mag). I bet Dell's looking at it right now.
