Well, now the video drivers are fubared. I have tried every version it shows, but when I restart it comes up with a bad display and "launch driver manager".

I tried to remove 5.17.3, and you can't. The entire linux platform is fubared. I will have to reinstall.

There is a good reason its not supported,, IT DOESN'T WORK !!!!

I'm not a Linux expert, but it looks like you had some missing dependencies and the kernel didn't build correctly.

Well, it was recognized by the OS, but I could not install any video driver, and I could not un-install that kernel version.

No more unsupported versions for me. I will spend all night re-installing linux and my apps on that box.

Lesson learned.

New: I just saw the post above before I hit the post key. As a linux newbie, I will stick with mint. This box just can't do DC work other than F@H.

@Markfw

Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/510.60.02/build/make.log

You don't need to reinstall everything.

To rollback in terminal do:

sudo apt purge *051703 *

This will remove all of the image/module/header files for that version 5.17.3

You have some really old stuff in use here.

sudo apt purge *042008 *

So, the first line is your NVIDIA driver balking at the updated kernel. Look in the log file to see what the issue is. Maybe try the 5.16.x version instead. I'm assuming your prior version was using 5.13.0-39

Sometimes when there's an issue with one kernel or another a bit more of an incremental approach makes life easier like bumping to 5.14.x then 5.15.x then 5.16.x to see where the driver issue comes into play.

Again, this is not a hit on alder lake, the software is not up to par with it yet, leave it at that. Maybe windows, but I was getting 2.6 million ppd on win 11, and the same unit under linux 20.3 kernel 5.13 driver 510 is getting 5.6 million ppd. Thats the latest win 11 and latest nvidia drivers compared to older linux, older kernel, and fairly new drivers, not even compatible (fully) with alder lake. So here, old linux OS vs new windows OS, and linux kills windows.

For those that use Linux..

"with this tiny patch to Intel P-State driver in Linux 5.15.35, the performance is much better off than prior Linux 5.15 LTS releases, as expected... Besides better performance, the benchmark deviation between runs is also much lower. Without this fix, sometimes some of the workloads like Zstd compression were hitting the E cores and other times the P cores"

"The Intel Core i5 12600K and other Alder Lake hybrid processors should be in much better shape with this new Linux 5.15 point release, unless you are already on Linux 5.16 / 5.17 / 5.18 Git. "

That's the point I was trying to get mark to switch kernel versions but then ran into the NVIDIA driver issue.

Yes, I don't know if the kernel caused the driver issues or what. 5.13 works fine with the Nvidia 510 driver, but any non-supported kernel appears to make the driver go haywire. Its running the mint 20.3 standard install with all updates and driver 510. I am leaving it this way indefinitely, and the ecores are off.

I don't want to go in to other issues, lets just say I found out what I needed to about Alder lake by buying the 12700F.

Curious, but Linux and what you seem to be trying to accomplishing, are vastly different from what the 95% of the user base is using ADL for. ADL wasn't exactly created for Linux (such a small market) or DC applications. You seem to be trying to force a square plug in to a round hole.

What you found out, is that ADL doesn't work for your specific, minuscule market usage for the CPU. Sorry, but it really doesn't make sense what you are trying to do with something that isn't specifically built for such usage...

Linux runs the internet though. Users don't use it outside of enterprise as much because for so many years they've been brainwashed into windows / apple to know anything else.

Things that run Linux - routers / switches / firewalls / most servers (VM/ESX/HV/cluster) / etc. Even our cars / phones / etc.

It's just that it's not apparent that devices are sing *nix behind the fancy GUI / skin that gets applied over it.

I bought it so I could comment on it itelligently. If you don't own one, then its all feedback from web pages you have read. Nobody ever wrote about ADL on linux or DC performance, so how would I know ? At least I never saw it. Maybe I will find a better use for it then a F@H house for a 3070TI.

So Internet providers, routers, switches, phones, cars, and firewalls are using nVidia video cards on desktop computers using ADL CPUs running Linux? Interesting!

I use Linux all the time for work. Anything cloud native relies on Linux. From code deployments using Docker to CI/CD pipeline work.

My home PC is a different story. Only Windows there. None of what I work on during the day touches it. Separation of work/play.

A simple Google search reveals that Linux 5.18+ includes the proper scheduling for Alder Lake's hybrid architecture.

Maybe because the CPU wasn't optimized or built to run on Linux for DC purposes? I mean, you're basically taking a sedan and saying "oh, it doesn't do off-roading! and got stuck in the mud!" The CPU wasn't intended for such and it's odd that your expectation is that it should excel in something it was never built for.

I mean, you're basically saying the reviews are not commenting on it "intelligently", but you are testing outside of the normal perimeters (specific and minimally usage) and saying you are speaking on it intelligently? Was ADL designed for that??

I tried that. Cinnamon mint does not officially support higher than 5.13. Yes, there are other distributions that have higher kernels. I knew that when I bought it. Until I had an idssue, I just never tried to go higher than the supported version. 5.17 and up work on ADL.

Where does it say the CPU was built for DC on Linux? Sorry, you are the one who posted on it, not me. I don't have to prove anything, because all the reviews and the marketing of the CPU is NOT around DC on Linux as a highlighted use scenario.

So, because no one says it, its not designed for it ? Tech junky showed you where they run linux. You just like to troll don't you .

Where did Tech Junky provide any links from Intel stating any information about conducting DC on Linux? He never posted a link, at least on this page.

Lo siento, te equivocas.

Calling me a troll? Is that allowed because I have a different view than you?
