I cant even fathom what it is that causes the wow playerbase to be substantially dumber than in other MMOs.

Does WoW have a better payment system so much younger people can play easily?

Does WoW being substantially easier fuel "dumb" players coming beacuse they can succeed?

I dont understand it myself, but ive played a dozen or so MMOs, and WoWs players are exceptionally bad.

For 8 days they played "the murloc game" in trade chat and continuously spammed movie titles with the word murloc inserted randomly. It scrolled so fast the channel wasnt usable... for 8 solid days.

The mods would come in and mute 40 people, and it still wouldnt stop.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Murloc LOLOLOLOLOLOL"

The community in wow literally ruins the game for me, i just hope those dumbasses stay there when i go to warhammer.

Reason # 49 why I severely limit my online community experience.

The only games I'll play online are between known friend, or on servers I know are highly regulated.

In short, the only games I'll play online are IL-2 and Aces High III.

wow has by far the worst player base I've ever experienced
I think its a combination of the fact that its so easy, even solo, and higher level characters own lower ones so easily
Plus it looks kinda cartoony .. I enjoyed the graphics - I'm not saying their bad, but they could be appealing to the younger audience.

This entices people in the regard that they can go own STV or duskwood as a 60 <class> and gank people without much work and enjoy being assholes...

My biggest complaints would be the ganking dicks, immature babies who complained about drops in pugs (literally like 12-14 yr old kids), and when we'd have people who would never miss a raid during app status then like 2 weeks after being a full member would adopt their "normal" schedule and ditch out on raids early, and never show up etc.

Don't get me wrong, no one has to dedicate their lives to the game, but I don't appreciate people ditching 29 other people leaving us unable to complete content. That was probably my biggest of my complaints - don't join a hardcore guild if you can't handle it. They don't even know how easy they have it compared to EQ, everything is instanced in WoW and the game is seriously EZMODE!

maybe there are more WoW players on at any one time. you'd expect the number of jackasses you encounter to go up if that's the case (as compared to another MMO).

there are definitely more, maybe you haven't played mmos long enough?

I know when I started I was pretty young and didn't act like these people, so I guess it must just be the next generation of MMO players.

If you are looking for a better and more mature MMO population take a look at the following MMO's below:

EQ2, LOTRO, Saga of Ryzom ( a skill based, sandbox MMO ).

Out of the three Saga of Ryzom has the best population of them all IMHO.

i've played mmos since 1998. i've played almost every commercial mmorpg and plenty of free ones. they all have their share of immature idiots.
i know WoW bashing is the "cool" thing to do, but come on, at least get your facts straight.

There is a significant difference from the WoW player base than UO/EQ playerbase

If you don't think there is a difference, I dunno what to say to you, obviously there are no facts about it. Many people complain about the WoW player base.

I mean there are huge differences between EQ and WoW - even EQ2 and WoW.

We can argue all you want, but the reason I quit wow was because of the players, and I've met some asshats in other games, but never felt like quitting at all.

I'm not bashing WoW, I play it. It's a decent game, not fantastic (though it has its moments) and certainly not terrible. Having played other MMORPGs though, I can say with certainty its plaeyrbase is uniquely "special".

Not really, in most cases sheer numbers are limited by hardware and/or logistics. For example, while WoW may have many millions more players than Everquest, each individual server probably doesn't hold many more, so the number you interact with isn't far greater. For another example, you're far, far (far far far far far) more likely to come across a complete idiot in a WoW party (5 people, including you) than you were in an EQ party (6 people, self included).

I think it's a combination of it being a Blizzzard game and it being popular enough to make the genre widely known about. A lot of the kids who would otherwise never pay a monthly fee (aka. mom said no) whined in this case until she caved in, due to the brand name. And prior to WoW, with 8-9 million players, the most popular MMORPG in the US market was EQ or EQ2, each of which peaked a bit shy of a half million. A lot of people who'd otherwise be watching (and enjoying) people eat slugs or sing off key on TV heard about WoW and tried it.

EQ2 - I'll never, ever pay Sony another penny. It also has no PvP, something I didn't mind EQ 1 not having, but I couldn't do without now that I've had it in an MMORPG.

LOTRO - same thing with PvP.

Saga of Ryzom - I'll look into it

Mostly though, I'm ok with the game itself (WoW). It's just the people who play it who can be such a turnoff at times.

Actually EQ2 has had PvP for quite some time now. Of course, that won't help you with the Sony part. :)

IIRC, WoW has more teens in its population than other MMOs. And I hate to admit it, but most of the time:
teens + online game/forum - mess

I just worded it wrong is all. EQ 1 technically had pvp too.. you could duel people, and there were 3 pvp servers (4 when SZ was launched, but that was toward the end of when I played). I meant a solid focus on it though.

In WoW there are battlegrounds with organized pvp and tangible rewards. A RvR system like DAoC's (and presumably, warhammer's when its out) would work, but not the barebones pvp available in eq2.

You ever wonder why this has been reposted so many times? Maybe because there's some truth to it?

I'm currently playing WoW, and it certainly is different than any other MMO. If you really claimed to have played most MMOGs out there, and you really can't tell the difference between WoW and games like EQ2 or Eve, then YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE IMMATURE kids.

Youre wrong, ive experienced infanately more immature / just plain stupid people in WoW.

Ive played:

Eve Online
EQ
EQ2
DAOC
Horizons
Planetside
Shadowbane
AC
UO

The community in wow is substantially worse than any of the others i have played, so much so that i expect average wow player to be a drooling idiot.

you've probably experienced more because, oh i dunno, maybe wow has 1000000 times the amount of players those other games have. still doesn't take away from the fact that all of those games DO have idiots and immature people playing.

if you say otherwise you're just in denial or a complete idiot. i can log onto any mmorpg and find idiots within seconds of joining.

i really don't know why i bother to reply because this is obviously just another WoW bashing thread and there is no rational thought involved.

Sure there are idiots playing all MMORPGs, nobody claimed otherwise. We're talking about density here. Speaking of which...

Uhh, its still limited to the number of players on a single server...

And with eve online, you have 150,000 people on one server.

vs. 5k on a wow server...

I think its based on a number of things. I still have to agree that any popular game including the MMO genre is susceptible. Wow is probably the most popular of all the MMO's so it will more than likely have a larger player base. Sure everyone is spread out but that doesn't detract from the fact that there are just more people. Popularity can do funny things, you get the draw of people (many full to medium servers) and at the same time draw the wrong crowd (ex: kiddies, a-holes, jack-a$$es and the such).

I don't think graphics or computing power really have much to do with the current issue. Accessibility would be more prevalent. A game that is easy to play and easy to "get into" definitely makes it more popular. So, both aspects go hand in hand. I'd use CS as an example (no its not an MMO) but it does have a large player base, is popular, is accessible, and is spread out among many many servers. It may not be persistent as an MMO but it does have many of its qualities. Look at the overall player base with CS. . . more than likely you will run into the team killer, the team flasher, the afk, the n00b, the arrogant a-hole, the leet speaker, the spammer, etc. The major contrast being WoW is a paid service while CS is not.

Look at this way. When EQ came out . . . how many kids at that time were allowed borrow money from mom and dad to play? I was in college at the time when EQ hit its peak but even then buying gold and items on diablo through fleabay was a bit foreign to me. Many parents, I believe feel the same way. Times has changed. Kids stay indoors more, they play more games, etc. And WoW delivers. You make a game easily accessible then you are likely to have that mix of immaturity into the playerbase. Lastly, if you wanted to be a jacka$$ where you do it? Where would you make the largest impact? Where can your so called "a$$holery", if there were ever a term, have the largest effect? You wouldn't go to EvE or maple online, no one would ever know about your antics? (not bashing them, I play both and they are great). But you see all these viral videos, right? Leroy, the funeral gankers, etc. They all play WoW and even people who don't play wow know what they are. Like hackers trying infiltrate windows over mac or linux. The latter aren't "hacker" proof, I'm sure given enough time they can be cracked, but they just aren't popular enough. There isn't enough exposure.

I think it is a sad representation of the state of the average human being. Given the fact that the more people you get, the better representation of the general populous you are given, we can deduce that most people are !diots.
