No necessarily. Keep in mind people tend to look at the bad side of things without the other representative half. Remember the phrase, "It only takes a few bad apples . . ." I think they're a lot of good people playing any MMO including WoW. But it doesn't take a lot of bad people to make one's view shift toward a negative one.

Heh, I remember the murloc movie title thing that people were doing. Before that, it was Chuck Norris all the time. I just shrug off most of the crap and try to have fun. The one thing that bothers me the most is incompetence from players. Especially when it comes to group things and they're just messing around... gotta realize you're not the only person in there.

People begging for help and money is pretty annoying too. I leveled without asking for help or money... take off your training wheels, kiddo!

"Can u plz run me thru RFC or WC plz???" :D

I rarely go into any of the major cities in Azeroth so luckily, I don't get many whispers asking for help or money. Shattrath City FTW!

It really varies. I was surprised as hell when I transferred from my dead "new" server (launched mid 06) to a release server with 5x the horde - I encountered far less begging.

I'm on Cenarion Circle, which is one of the more populated server so I still get whispers from time to time. Luckily, because Horde is outnumbed by a large amount, the Alliance side tends to have more of the beggers. I've thought about messing around and taking level 9 beggers into WC and aggroing the whole instance and vanishing on them. :D

I am also quite convinced that raid guilds from dark age, EQ, etc... could walk through wow raid zones with very little difficulty.

The generally bad playerbase makes it hard.

most people don't realize how easy a 'hardcore" raiding guild is in WoW compared to its predecessors, and all they do is whine and complain about spending too much time on new content, repair bills, etc...

their lucky they aren't doing corpse runs with -1 level :p
plus many people think that they can join up with a hardcore guild and play like they do on average, or skip raids - then cry when they get threatened with a /gkick

I quit WoW after 4 months due to the community. It took me a little longer for Diablo 2 (yes yes I know it's not a MMORPG) but it had to happen one day. And also it happened with Star Wars: An Empire Divided, but much, much later on, because when it first began it was a SW fan's dream to play that one. Overall I have only played two such games (WoW and An Empire Divided) and I wouldn't dare trying any others coming in the future by fear of being disappointed by the community, which is the major part of a MMORPG. I must say the the upcoming Warhammer incarnation of an MMORPG is very tempting though.

I think it is because the system spec's to play the game are so low. It's a catch 22... that is why they are #1 because anyone can play it and thats why you get all the trash players. I played DiabloII for years with my group "goodmorninggroup...GMG" and had a blast in HC but the game went to heck way before then! It was for the same reason almost any computer could play the game.

I experienced Chuck Norris chat, the Murloc Game, and other Barrens chat garbage.
Fairly simple gameplay + mainstream Blizzard popularity + low to mid level zone = people laughing at "Indiana Jones and the Murloc of Doom" for weeks straight.

Also, since the majority of the game is solo friendly, people will spill their thoughts into general chat because they do not have a group to talk to.

I actually agree with you, and think these are the contributing factors.

Solo play = not really prepared for grouping and end game raids by the time you get to them = tons of selfish babies

Blizzard communities from prior games went to shit and those moved on to wow.

Easy to play, and low system requirements.

You know now that I look at your post and mine I think a HC lvl "characters" would make for a very clean game in WOW. The thing is like in Diablo losing a HC hurt so darn bad!!! I remember not playing for a week or two when one of my high lvl's would die because I was so ??????? burnt out.... lost.... po'ed! But we still counted on our group to loot our gear and bring it back to us on a lower lvl character. Great group game and a lot of trust!

I learned this early when grouping with a few dimwits back in late 2004 right after release. And everyday some new incident reinforces my view of my fellow playerbase.

Whether it is another argument about Chuck Norris vs Arnold or the local racist bigots spamming the public channels. The WoW playerbase has proven time and time again they are the lowest forms of life in the MMORPG world.

Anyways I attribute some of this to the ability of everybody to solo and relatively easily hit the top lvl. In other games like EQ or DAOC where you lost exp if you died and they required groups(social skills), these types of players would die off because they couldnt progress. DAOC had a lot of the same behavior back in the day before instancing in the 1-20 lvl range. But through the 20s and into the 30s these douchebags were weeded out as they couldnt lvl. By the early 40s you were left with people who were respectable and social.

Anyways WoW doesnt have this component to it and thus the kiddies can grind their way to lvl 70 and be asstards the whole way up the chain.

Well it isnt a MMORPG but this is typical of the diablo II community. I took this picture a while ago of the chat gem saying "perfect gem activated" and it just so happens there was a common begger there too.

I actually have the most problems with people in guilds that I'm in. People that hit 'O', click on the guild tab and look for a level 70 that's not in an instance. I don't even know these lowbies in my guild, I sure am not going to give you gold or drop the quest I'm on to help you.

Overall, I hate helping people, because no one gives a damn about the people that're helping. I went to help a guildie with my priest to get Gorefiend's Armor... they had a stupid hunter pet tanking and there was no way my priest could keep that pet alive (even being holy with over 1000 +healing). It took what looked like 2500-3000 damage per hit! I got sick and tired of trying to heal it that I brought my warrior in and tanked and healed. Then they were all, "Oh hey, let's go kill Ruul because I need it!" and I'm all, "I don't have that yet...". Did anyone care or say something like, "Oh I'll help you when you get it." NO. I duo'd Ruul to 20% until a hunter that asked me if he could join came in.

Of course there were some people that I had no problem helping, because they'd do the same for me. I remember leveling my rogue (way back when) and I was getting the Scholomance key. I was at the "Mold rhymes with..." quest and I forgot to buy some thorium. A guildie literally came down from somewhere on the other continent just to hand deliver me the thorium. That's  right there.

Shattrath would be golden if they'd finally put an auction house in it :(.

I have to agree with you guys that the WoW playerbase is most accurately described as "special." My experience comes from playing EQ, EQII, SWG, DAoC, CoH/CoV, among others. I do find ways to combat it though by playing with RL friends the majority of the time or sticking to guilds that are predominately adults or 18+.

Luckily, my guild is fairly mature. Most of them are older, married couples that play together. Hell, there have been times when the 60+ level members have flat out bought level 40 mounts for the lowbies in our guild and then those lowbies pay it forward to other lowbies when they hit 40. I'm glad I'm in a guild that has a tight community.

I don't hate it at all. It's easily one of the best games I've played.

I avoid most of the noobs by grouping and raiding exclusively with guildies. Most of these folks and I go back 2 years, and a few of them I met in 99 when we played EQ.

The community at large is mostly idiots but as long as I don't read the official forums I'm good.

BTW,

WHERE IS MANKRIKS WIFE

Oh and you may kiss your fun goodbye, but at least you get free items .
