I'm currently running a Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) on a EPoX 9NDA3 mobo with 768 MB PC3200 RAM (yeah, I know, I should have at least a gig) and a 9800 PRO. I am a gamer though my game of choice lately has been World of Warcraft. However, I've played a few demos of more recent games and I find my framerate lower than I'd like. I've been looking at upgrading the video card over the past week and I stumbled upon this topic. I've never been on the bleeding edge and obviously can't be with only AGP, so I'm looking at th $200-300 price range for a new card, preferably at the lower end of that. What are the chances the 7800 GS will be under $300? I'm interested in the x850XT if I find a deal on it and then my other NVIDIA option is a 6800GS. The 6800 GS is definitely in my price range. Any suggestions?

Edit: As a reference, Oblivion is a game I've been looking forward to and I would like to at least get decent graphics with it.

hang on . . . ati's entire new lineup is released next week . . . nVidia's next month

we will know a lot more then

in the meantime, keep looking for that x850xt . . . for ~$200 it's great bang-for-buck and the 6800GS is already here in AGP . . .

i am guessing the 7800GS in agp will be ~$350 [seems to 'fit' marketing]

apoppin, I hope to hell and back that it's not $350, I mean what does it offer for that price point? 16 pipes? we have that already in AGP. 256MB GDDR3 memory? we have that already in AGP. a 400mhz core? we have that already in AGP.....At the risk of being redundant, what does this have to offer us at this price point?

PS. OH! PUREVIDEO!!!!!! WHOA! IM SO NOT EXCITED!

Hey, I 'm just going to stick with the old games. Who needs $350 video cards? They've gotten too greedy with thoughts of selling 2 video cards to idiots who think they need them. And just to play a game???? LMAO!

i still believe it's MSRP will be well over $300 . . .

name it's AGP "competition" again . . .

what's available now?

. . . x850xt - $250 no SM3.0

6800GS? - $225

. . . did i 'miss' something? 😛

just being "new" it's gonna be $299 😉
[no competition . . . is gonna MSRP for $50 more]

Errr, buying two $350 graphics cards doesn't make you any more an "idiot" than buying a $900 cpu, a $400 case, some $500 RAM, etc..

The facts of life are that some people either have more money than you, or are willing to spend more on their computer than you. This does not make them less intelligent than you.

If you're an adult, you shouldn't need to be told these things.

Apparently everyone has more money then me. LOL, even there kids have more money then me.

And yes, buying (2) $350 dollar graphics cards doesn't make you any more of an idiot then someone spending $900 on a cpu, $400 for a case, or $500 RAM. It also doesn't make you any less of an idiot then they are either. 😉

I haven't seen a review at all to where SM 3.0 has just pounded or destroyed SM 2.0. I see virtually no difference between the two at ALL.

Dang, this thread went on forever! I'm going to add to the volumes of comments by saying "long live AGP". My 3 year old box just got a major facelift with an X850XT and I'm very pleased with the results. I can play F.E.A.R., HL2, D3, Q4 and all the great new games with lots of eye candy and respectable framerates. My next machine will undoubtedly have PCI-E graphics but I'm one to wait for the technology to mature and the software to really need the extra horsepower. Besides, I don't have the cash for all that fancy new junk. 200 bux for a ripping AGP card is sweet bargain for anyone wanting to prolong the life of their gaming computer.

Wishful thinking.

you think so? maybe they'll release something on the low end?

Yes I think so, altho my hopes are with you. I just don't see them releasing anything more after 7800GS and X1800's series for AGP. Hope I am wrong tho🙂

EXCELLENT POINT😉

Damn PC Surgeon... sounds like you're becoming pessimistic. Giving up the belief in White Elephants? (of course there's only one).

Just kidding my friend! 😉

Hopefully the 7800GS will not be the last AGP card (but maybe it will... who knows).

Wow...could it be that Nvidia read the petition to bring it out? Good to hear that they are still supporting AGP. Though, Rollo would not agree. He and I went over this back-and-forth in another thread. He challenged me to loosen my pursestrings. And I did! 😀

Hey Rollo, not everyone could dump the bucks to SLI 7800GTX. So challenge me to get another 7800GT!
