If this card is under $200, it will be a great upgrade for a lot of folks who don't want to buy a complete new system. I have an Athlon X2 that is overclocked to 3.0Ghz and connected to an ATI X800XT graphics card. A new 3850 would definitely increase my performance and cost a good bit less than a complete new system PLUS a new graphics card.

Also, for those that feel that AGP is so archaic, just look at the specs. AGP 8X has a maximum throughput of 2 GB/s. PCIe x16 has a max of 4 GB/s. PCIe is not light years faster than AGP as some people like to think. A 3850 may be taxing the limits of AGP, but it will still give me a huge boost over my current X800 card.

Of course it's dead on P4 systems. Seriously I've seen it... after C2D chips came out the P4 systems just magically STOPPED RUNNING GAMES. OMG it was amazing!

ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! I managed to isolate my p4 3.0 and x1950pro from that awful day. All around us p4 systems were shorting out, I quickly managed to unplug my network cable and shutdown my system to save it. I have been resetting my system clock to before the c2d's came out just to be safe. long live the obsolete. :D

I didn't see much of an improvement from a 7600GT to my current x1950Pro because my CPU is holding me back, a lot.

So I have to wonder if guys with those P4 will see any worthy improvements with a 3850? That's a massive bottleneck right there.

And what's with those 'nuke AGP' morons? Some bright minds we have here.

Marty, you ought to look into an X2 for your system. I have a Toledo core 4200 running at 3.0GHz and I think the 2nd core could help you push that 1950 a lot harder.

To be honest, I think he's right. My CPU is holding me back a lot in Oblivion and Bioshock. For instance, I get the same frame rates at 640x480 than at 1280x960 HDR 8xAF in Oblivion. Maybe, at most, there's a 5% difference in frame rate. Hardly dramatic. On older games (I play a lot of racing simulators like GTR2) an X2 core won't make much of a difference.

But still, I'm dying to get a X2. And a new PSU too. I'd be set for a long time with that.

An X2 CPU is a pretty cheap upgrade and a lot of games can take advantage of the dual cores. The X1950 is a pretty decent card so I'm not sure I'd spend the cash to upgrade to a 3850 on an older machine, even with an X2. Save the cash until you're ready to get a new Core 2 system.

The only reason to upgrade over a X1950 on an AGP system is for the Home Theatre features and better AA at WD resolutions. Other than that, I'd say there might not be a reason to update. If you have 2g of DDR400 and have an X2 and something like a 6800 AGP then this is a perfect upgrade that won't make you replace the entire PC. However, bless the ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 though and its PCIe and AGP goodness.

I just went from a Neo 2 Platinum (Nforce3) AGP
with a Opteron 170 @ 2.75ghz and X1950Pro 512mb + X2 Accelero 2GB DDR500

to

Asus A8N32 SLI - Deluxe + HD3870 and selling my previous board and GPU with a Opteron 146 I got laying around.
Had to retire my AGP Rig, and I want to be able to take the PCI E card to my next board which will be a Quad Core upgrade sometime.

I was able to play most of the new gamers no problem at 1680x1050 on the AGP rig, however the increase in speed to the HD3870 was worth it.

man im sick of agp. went to pci-e and never looked back. my $240 8800GTS 320MB (back in march) has never been happier.

but this is nice for definite hold outs...

Shrug... I'm using an am2 6000+ cpu in an MSI am2/agp board. Got the cpu for free, so reusing the x1650pro AGP I have until I decide when I'll upgrade to real am2 board.

My setup is perfect for the gaming I do(mainly COD4 plus a few other things). Dont know if I'll get this vid card or just save my money for a new pcie mobo+vid card, but its nice having the choice. I also need to upgrade from my aging Viewsonic CRT(hoping to get 24" Wide), but cant get everything at once unfortunately.

so I built the system in my sig just before PCI express came out.. like a month before. I'm in the middle of a new build but want to wait on the new line of Penryn to come out.

I want to give this computer to my son but my 6800GT is really.. I mean really hot.. last night got to 113C. So I was going to my a cooler for it but if I can just get a new faster AGP card then I will do it.

Is this 3850AGP out yet? will that or the x1950 Pro be much faster than the 6800GT?

Thanks

The X1950PRO is at least two times faster than the 6800GT, and in newer games with lots of shaders and anti alasing, is even higher.

How dare you bring facts into the AGP witchburner festival! Hey kidz run your PCI-E card in 8x mode and that's effectively the same as AGP. Does it suck? I thought not. Maybe a few FPS difference.

Anyone who is saying kill off the AGP card obviously does not own stock in AMD/ATI or nVidia. Otherwise they would be saying: Yes, more sales!

QFT.......

What is with these guys, just because they could afford to jump so quick, there is probably more AGP pc's out in the world gaming right now than PCIe!

Quick? People have had around 4 years or so to make the switch to PCIe, an eternity in PC development.

Funny, I'd have thought it was the kiddies holding on to their older systems. Or cheap college students.

Exactly. But the Average PC user keeps their computer for about 5 years. This excludes almost everybody here on AT of course. So the consumers who purchased their computers right before the emergence of PCI-e, still technically have a year to go. hehe. 3850 AGP would be a nice option for them to last them a year or two until they buy their newer systems.

Right now, I can't afford to build a whole new system for my mother (both monetarily and time) , for example. She has a 6600 vanilla chugging along through SIMS 2, which is her favorite game to play. A 3850 would make short work of pretty much any game she would play. Only other option for her at this point would be a 7900GS AGP. Which is too much money for what it is. A 3850 would kill it, for probably the same price with these insane price wars going on.

There's virtually no difference between AGP and PCIe apparently:
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=8197&page=6

The limiting difference is going to be the CPU, but looking at the 3dmark06 results using futuremark orb, there's athlon 64 x1950 systems that compete well against newer rivals, not that much of a difference really. I guess newer games that use more complex AI and physics are going o suffer the most.
