Matthew Bryan Rooney was assaulted Jan. 24, 2004, by two men on College Main at Northgate due to his sexual orientation.

Yeah A&M sure is a great school. It's not filled with bigots and ignorant Houston-white-trash at all.

When was the last time a fat kid got beat up at a university? You say there are racists and bigots everywhere. I don't recall this happening at UT, or any other school in Texas. The point is that at A&M, there are enough bigots that the few with balls feel it will be acceptable to assault a homosexual, and it proves true, when passers by egg them on and yell slurs.

I don't give a damn about the football rivalry. Texas is full of inbred, white trash racists, and they converge on A&M. Visit UT, or SWTSU, or Tech for that matter, then visit A&M... There is a difference in the people that go to these schools. I guarantee that after this happened, half the student body was cheering for these guys.

I saw it happen at U of C 3 years ago, and I doubt very much I saw the only incident. If you are not "normal" or even look at someone wrong, you risk getting beat up by being in the wrong place at the wrong time... which can be almost anywhere at anytime. University, party, mall parking lot, house, walking down the street, whatever.

If you've never seen this happen, I'd like to know what Utopia you live on.

I don't think you are getting the idea that this is much more likely to happen at a place like A&M. Talking to someone who does go to A&M and he confirms that. One of the things they say about Austin is that it's for "steers and queers". Yeah it's for queers, because they beat them up in College Station. You have to be an idiot to not see the corellation between conservative zealotry and assaulting homosexuals.

while i have not been to college station, i have been to austin on many occassions. and yes, you do have a point. but the fact of the matter is Austin is much larger than CS. more diversity. believe me, i have seen my fair share of fights downtown in the 5 or 6 times weve gone out. 6th street at 2am can be pretty interesting walking around when the bars let out. im sure if you walked around austin enough, you would encounter someone at the wrong time that would wanna fight you for no reason other than youre there.

No. The people trying to sound smart are the ones who can't handle generalizations because they believe no one should be prejudged or whatever, and that "this could happen anywhere" means that everyone is just as likely to beat up a homo. Repeating like a parrot "broad generalizations broad generalizations" doesn't make it false that Aggies are in general more intolerant than the general populace.. And then in the next thread you same people will turn around and say racial profiling is good.

Let me say this again. All A&M students are obviously not bigots. But you can't ignore the fact that the ones who really want to be there, and see themselves as bleeding maroon, are the type of people who hate homosexuals.
