If you ever had to deal with any of the aftermarket extended warranties, you'd agree with them.
They all suck, no exceptions. Some suck less than others.
First Extended, Smart Choice (if they're still around) are two that sucked less, but still sucked.
They are all, without exception, a huge pain in the ass for dealers to work with. They have idiots on their hotlines that ask all sorts of stupid questions, they seem to always want to question the book times (always seem to have the "same" book you do but it has different times), parts prices, labor rates (who the hell are they to tell me what hourly rate I can charge?), etc, etc.
They take forever to get through to, take forever to take your info and give you approval. They love to send inspectors out to take pics and assess the carnage if you have a tranny, engine or other drivetrain problem. So that makes the dealer look like the bad guy, because they have to tell the customer that HE needs to approve the tear down, and the warranty company won't authorize the repair until it's torn down and their guy inspects it. So the customer has to essentially commit to paying for the repair before he finds out whether it's covered or not.
Lots of them exclude collateral damage. Such as, a transmission sun gear fails, and metal gets circulated throughout the transmission. Generally, it's a very good idea to replace or at least rebuild the valve body, replace the torque converter, and whatever else is remotely questionable after such a failure. But they won't pay for that. Only the failed part, which is B.S.
I've seen many times they paid for a tranny overhaul, but not the fluid. WTF? Or they wouldn't pay for the gaskets...just the hard parts. Stupid stuff.
Seen many times they finally approve a job, and agree on an exact price. You get the job done, fax them the bill with everything like they agreed to, and they're to call back with a corporate credit card # for your cashier. And they call back, and authorize less than you agreed upon, even though everything is perfect.
Or they don't call back that same day, the customer shows up to get the car that evening, and it's not paid for. And they're pissed at you because you can't release it without payment, and it's THEIR warranty company that's the holdup.
And on and on and on.
Factory warranties are the only way to go. The second-best way, is an aftermarket warranty that is sold by the dealer. Even if the car you bought isn't the same brand the dealer sells, you take your car to them, and they sub it to that brands' local dealer. (e.g., you buy a Chevy from a Ford dealer, it breaks, you take it to them and they send it to a Chevy shop to get fixed)
If you have an 8 year old car, you're already playing with house money. Don't waste yours on a warranty. Just put whatever money the warranty costs in the bank for your emergency repair fund.
