After work I'm picking up a DS3L and an E2180

Also gotta pick up a PSU. Kitty wants to be able to SupCom with me, even if we'll both still be limited to about 4 players on 20x20 as our largest games. I'd also like her to be able to play other games with me, so >_>

Gonna put the stock cooler that came with my E6600 on her CPU, hoping that'll be effective enough to get her to 300fsb with whatever voltage that winds up requiring.

Other than that, she'll have 2GB DDR2 800 RAM, my old GeForce 8800GTS 320MB, and the usual HDD/Optical stuff that she's got left over.

I think we're going to take her old mobo and some other old parts and build a computer for the living room to hook up to the TV via S-Video. Play Doom and other oldschool games that only run in 640x480 anyway. Maybe do some emulation, too.

I have a similar rig overclocked. I went for the 4gb of ram though and skimped on the video card because i am going to upgrade it when the 4x00 ati series comes out. Yours will run better than mine and i haven't had any problems with it yet.

it's only 2GB because that's the RAM I had left over from my rig (didn't want to populate all slots :p)

She's going to have a 7600GS until we can get her PSU RMA'd properly, unless this computer store has a good PSU in stock, in which case I'll RMA her dead one for a refund instead.

Apparently the only E2180 they have in stock is Open Box. Imma inspect it first, but here's hoping it's still the M0 stepping. Any way I can check that in the store?

If it isn't, how do the older batches overclock?

Jax, there's no need to check anything, all E2180's and E2200's are M0 stepping. Of course, I would still recommend you not buying that open box. There's a very good chance that it was brought back because it wasn't a good overclocker.

No, it was brought back because it was in a prebuilt computer and the previous owner wanted to upgrade to a quadcore. I asked.

Whether they're telling the truth... I don't know. But hey, if the chip sucks, *I'll* bring it back. I'll claim it didn't work if I have to. The next chip up that they have is an E4500 for ~$150, so...

You realize my nearly 600 posts here were almost ALL made at work, gersson? I'm on my lunch break now, but most of my job is listening to recordings. Hence, I have a lot of free time, and I spend lots of it on anandtech :p

Good luck with your plans. Is the PSU you have now not good enough to power the GTS?

Haha, all's fair in love and overclocking, isn't it?:D

Yep. To be fair, I don't have huge expectations. If it gets 3GHz stable, I will be delighted. 2.8 and I'll keep it. Below 2.8, it'll go back.

Unless the chip is abysmal, 3Ghz should be very easy, from what I understand.

E4500 can be found for as low as $100 on sale (Microcenter B&M)... Fry's just had a combo with a mobo and E4500 for $100.

I was able to hit 3ghz fairly easily with my 2160, but no luck getting higher then that. But I think you should be able to get 2.8ghz.

There's no Microcenter or Fry's in Washington State, to my knowledge.

Is it normal for Intel coolers to only spin at 1k RPM?

got my e2180 and ds3l to 3ghz on stock voltage. It doesn't want to go any higher though even with more voltage

I think I am going to need to upgrade soon though b/c assassins creed is using up to 97% cpu load at times @1920x1200. I want a new video card when the next gen cards come out, but this chip may hold me back. Not bad though considering it cost me $75 and performs like a $150 chip

Fortunately this is no longer true! For the Seattle area, there's a Fry's in Renton just off 405 (exit 5?). For the Vancouver area, there's a Fry's in Wilsonville, OR off 5.

well, the closer of those is about 40 miles away, so I don't see it being worth my while. That is a lot of gas.

Got her stuff all put together, just finished reinstalling WinXP for her. Whee!

Ok, so she's Orthos stable for four hours at stock. Good enough for me as far as making sure nothing's defective :p

It was running pretty toasty before, her case is rather cramped. A couple of zip-tied 120mm fans later, everything is running much, much cooler. Now she's ~60C under load on her CPU, and her top HDD near the 8800 is running ~40C, instead of ~60C (yikes).

I need to get her some aftermarket cooling for this thing, it's not gonna be fun to OC if it stays that hot. How the heck do other people do it?

Those the temps after or before overclocking?

Edit: and my 2140 can beat up your 2180 ;)

That's before. I tried OC but even OC to 2.4 it was rising near 70C and I ended the stress test.

i hit 65c when I'm overclocked... I would be concerned something basic is wrong, not mounted properly, maybe need to re-seat it with new thermal goop, or something...

That is way to hot for not even overclocking it yet. Which case did you say she had?

Some crappy generic case with no front intake.

I may remount the heatsink later, but I figured I'd let the AS5 cure and see how much the temps drop. Or I'll just pick up an aftermarket cooler, I really don't like the stock ones.
