I already know this disadvantages, which make the company perform poorly simply so that it can increase a temporary stock value which means nothing in the long run and if anything is detrimental to the company I.E Dell. So what are the advantages to being publicly traded?

companies go public because they need an infusion of capital, cash to be precise. with that cash, they can put it in r&d, pp&e, they can grow their business, make acquisitions. expand, what's wrong with that? it's not just about the stocks.

Access to a wider range of investors resulting in cheaper and more plentiful capital to grow your business. Wider name recognition. Many reasons...

I am curious as to your assertion that Dell's thinking is all short-run and non-stratiegic. Please back that up?!?!

Dell has been all caught up in trying to appease stock holders that quality has gone down the chutes since about late '03/early '04. Dell used to mean quality, but now it just means mass produced garbage, their constant corner cutting has finally caught up with them. Their laptops don't last very long and overheat constantly, I believe the reason why their laptops were the first to fail with the batteries exploding, as did apple was because both their laptops run significantly hotter than the competition and therefore accelerated the defective battery to failure faster than running at, say ambient temperatures.

Sounds reasonable enough and I agree 100% 😉
