I am curious as to your assertion that Dell's thinking is all short-run and non-stratiegic. Please back that up?!?!
Dell has been all caught up in trying to appease stock holders that quality has gone down the chutes since about late '03/early '04. Dell used to mean quality, but now it just means mass produced garbage, their constant corner cutting has finally caught up with them. Their laptops don't last very long and overheat constantly, I believe the reason why their laptops were the first to fail with the batteries exploding, as did apple was because both their laptops run significantly hotter than the competition and therefore accelerated the defective battery to failure faster than running at, say ambient temperatures.
