Ads out of closet, into mainstream with gay themes

I'll know we've achieved total acceptance of the LGBT community when I see cosmetics, perfume and personal hygiene ads with two men or two women swooning in passionate embrace.

Been watching the Abercromie and Fitch ad campaigns for the last decade plus?

Selling homoerotic imagery under the thin veil of bromance to move sub par merchandise FTW.

Take away the privileged position and then you're entitled to whatever opinion you want.

I think you are looking at the situation backwards.

Shouldn't we all be entitled to live whatever lifestyle we want?

Instead of taking away the "privileged position", why not make everyone privileged?

So you're not against it so long as you never have to see it. You're the very model of enlightened tolerance.

Tolerating something doesn't mean I have to enjoy seeing it. I'm fine with everyone making their own choices of who to be with and what they choose to do, but seeing men kissing makes me sick, it's disgusting to me. Telling me I shouldn't be repulsed by it is like telling me I should like liver: it's not a choice, I just think it's disgusting.

Of course someone else might find me disgusting for whatever reason as well, that's fine too. As long as everyone understands that everyone else has a right to a different opinion it works fine.

I'm very tolerant, but I don't want to see gay stuff in shows I watch, so I'll not watch shows that have it in them. Do I go on some campaign to get them off the air? No, to each his own. If you don't like something, don't watch it.

Acceptance of someone's right to do something doesn't mean I have to enjoy seeing it. I don't want to see two fat people going at it. They certainly have a right to, but I don't want to see it. Nothing wrong with that.

This is why tolerance is just the first step and not the destination.

That's different than saying they shouldn't show gays on tv because it make you personally uncomfortable. You're making a choice of what media to consume without saying that it should be imposed on everyone else.

As a consumer, this doesn't bother me because it portrays a gay couple, it bothers be because it's cheap, poorly thought out advertising.

All I saw was "I'm gay, and I have an iPad, but I'm switching to Kindle" and that should be the message. This just poked fun at some lady who thought the guy was hitting on her, and oh, by the way, he's gay.

There are more subtle and mature ways to do this with out being all Will & Grace about it.

Subtle and mature? I'm assuming you are not in marketing...

You'd be surprised.

I just feel that there are better ways to do this and this didn't seem very high brow or even that funny. If more gay men are higher earners, presumably a smarter angle of humor would be more appreciated. This comes off as dumbed down and poking fun in a stereotypical way. It isn't my brand to manage, but if it were, I'd have gone back to the agency and asked for something smarter.

People get upset over commercials featuring Gay themes because they are straight...but I am a straight woman and I am bothered by Herbal Essences commercials that feature women pleasuring themselves by washing their hair and moaning loudly.

And these aren't late night commercials....

As I mentioned earlier, it's simply ham-handed marketing. It's not just two people going about their daily lives who happen to be gay. Gay is a punchline. Ads like this are about as helpful to homosexual equality as performing in blackface was helpful to the civil rights movement.

I really hate the one where she's on the plane. She is in there moaning etc, walks out and her hair is dry. Whose hair dries that fast?

Fixed that for you.

Its a matter of respect. We are supposed to accept gay rights, but how dare we voice our own opinions?

Because someone lives a gay lifestyle does not mean I have to like or respect it.

Weve been ramming down hetro lifestyles on gays forever.

"Because someone lives a hetro lifesytle does not mean i have to like or respect it." Works both ways see 🙂

I wish I could have an organic experience. 🙁

You're comparing this to blackface, really?! If anything, I thought it was refreshing to see a pretty normal portrayal of a gay relationship.

Oh yeah, i forgot teh gayz throughout history have almost destroyed human existance. My bad.

You misunderstand. The hetero lifestyle is necessary for the continuation of the human race.

Comparing the importance of the hetero lifestyle and homo lifestyle to soceity is absurd.

You mean unless you want the human race to continue to exist.

So if people generally accept that some people are homosexual, the human race will cease to exist?

My God! Our species is under threat! What are we doing going to work every day when we should be spending every minute screwing!

What the hell has the human race's continued existence got to do with some people being homosexual and society's acceptance of that? Are you afraid that if homosexuality is completely accepted in society then everyone will want to switch?

I was referencing "Because someone lives a hetro lifesytle does not mean i have to like or respect it."

If you want the human race to continue you pretty much do have to like or respect the hetero lifestyle.

The homosexual lifestyle is at best a neutral to society.

The homosexual lifestyle is like the cockfighting lifestyle.

Good fun to some, immoral to others.

Different strokes for different folks. But lets us not pretend that either the homosexual or cockfighting lifestyles have any real importance to the continuation of mankind like the heterosexual lifestyle does.

Part of me doesn't see it as a bad thing if the vast majority of humanity didn't exist. We're living through an era where we are the primary threat to many ecosystems and their organisms..where biodiversity is plummeting because of our actions.

Its called survival of the fittest.

And its funny that you worry about organisms dying while at the same time thinking it wouldn't be bad if the vast majority of humanity "didn't exist". Love the euphemism.

I have to admit if I saw advertising depicting two gay guys kissing I'd be disgusted. But last I checked my right not to be disgusted isn't covered anywhere, so I'd look away and move on.

The Christian right meanwhile is two busy backing one crucifix up its ass while deep-throating another and then gargling about how Jesus isn't letting them move.

So here's a question. Do any of you find the VW commercial showing the loser dad teaching his loser son how to throw worse than a girl? How would you feel if the punchline for that commercial would be dad's husband coming out and cheering the two on?
