"To install upgrade successfully, you will need a serial number and a previous version of this product on the same platform as this purchase."

Ugh. I was hoping it was to upgrade from elements.

Now, I know Adobe Photoshop is considered a professional high-end graphics editor with a zillion features....
But, for "normal" home users that want to be productive with pics, web-pages, etc. I'd like to recommend Uleads PhotoImpact product.

It's really a very good program, has plenty of features to keep you interested and busy, and has the advantage of being affordable.
I originally got turned onto them because PhotoImpact 4.5 was bundled in with a scanner purchase. Then a while back there was a FAR Upgrade deal to version 6 -- so now i use that.
I think version 8 is the current version -- but I know I've seen lower versions in jewel cases at places like OfficeDepot and/or Half-Price Books for ~$10 or less. Don't let the price fool you... It has plenty of easy-to-use features.

I also noticed that 1&1.com is bundling it (along with NetObjects Fusion -- which is also an excellent app.) with their web-host service for the cost of shipping.

Not to diss on Photoshop but unless you're a professional graphic artist, I'd definately consider Ulead PhotoImpact.

Yeah, ditto - I'm a big fan of Jasc's Paint Shop Pro 7. I bought Adobe Photoshop CS earlier this year for a publishing project, but I still use PSP7 90% of the time because I'm familiar with it and it's easy to use. Photoshop is wicked powerful, but with the power comes complexity. I can just get things done so much faster in Paint Shop Pro.

I learned Photoshop on my own way back in version 3. My favorite software. I own legitimate versions, but not recent versions (5 was last I paid for). A couple questions for anyone that knows.
1. What versions qualify for this upgrade? I thought I remember seeing that you must have a license of 6 or 7 to qualify for the CS upgrade. Anyone know for sure?
2. How does the activation process work? If I install on my computer, can I install it on my wife?s computer that?s like 6 feet away?

1.) Ver 5 will work. I dont think before that though.
2.) You can install on one main computer and one "mobile" computer, as long as they are in use at the same time.

1) any previous full version of the product qualifies. Photoshop elements, Photoshop LE any other product you want to name with photoshop in the name doesn't qualify. If you have a rescent version of photoshop (6 and later for CS i think) the installer will recognize the previous version and go threw on it's own. Any older version with require calling adobe and walking threw a manual process to verify previous version.

2) The EULA allows installation on 2 different computers for a main use and back up use so to speak. Activation allow 2 installs with out any problems then but if you both use it at the same time you are probably technically breaking the EULA.

Adobe sent my cousin an email asking him if he wanted a full version of Adobe CS for 300.00 since he was a registered user of Elements 2.0. A good deal for the legitimate full install. Less than 1/2 price.

I was wondering about question 1 there as well, since I've always thought about buying an older version of PS on ebay, then buying the upgrade to the latest for cheap. I remember I think for CS you needed to have 7 or 6, so I wanted to see what the case was for this one.

Hm...actually, it looks like the message may have changed from last night, but on this page, it reads as so:

"Adobe Photoshop CS Upgrade
To install upgrade successfully, you will need a licensed version of Photoshop 7.0 or earlier on the same platform as this purchase.
NOTE: Upgrade does not apply to Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Album, Photoshop Limited Edition, or PhotoDeluxe licensed users."

7.0 or earlier? Meaning...you could use something as old as 5.0? Hm...I might want to double check with what it says on the box.

Any previous version of the full program will work. Photoshop 1 is a qualifying product. The install process won't automatically recognize it tho and you'll have to call adobe and go threw a manual verifcation process for the install to go threw.

If you buy an old copy used make sure that it's either unregistered they call adobe and transfer the registration to you.

It doesn't install spyware. It does how ever as previously mentioned have activation included much like windows XP. In most cases how ever you don't even notice it. You can see adobe's activation stuff at http://www.adobe.com/activation/main.html
