I found a box with close to, if not over, 1000 pictures like these. Was thinking of selling them, but not sure if I want to for there is some big time history in them. Anyway thought Id post a few. I got about 100 picked out that caught my eye. If you guys want to see more lmk and maybe Ill scan and post them.

Any idea of the origin? If they've been in the house and are from other families, maybe donate them to your town's archive?
 
Very cool. Any writing on them that identifies the subjects? I second the donation idea. If it were me, I'd scan all of them for my own use, and donate the originals.
 
No sadly there was nothing written on them but on a very few.

Id donate them but Im broke and on ss so I kinda could use the money to fund some other projects 😉

IF I were to sell them that is for they are VERY cool to look at.

I don't think old pictures are very valuable. I could be wrong, but I've seen them in antique shops for very low prices. Whatever you do, I'd scan them all anyway. That'll allow you to look at them without increasing damage. You could donate the scans to your local municipality. It's useful for people looking at local history, and for people looking for ancestors.
 
Gun and violin that's awesome. We need a modern day caption on that. Something about he'll play his violin while people cry that he has a gun (actually I think I'll do that lol).

My dad inherited a box of photo's when my grandmom died. Some of the photos are from the 1860's. Some on those tintype backings too. Tons of photos. It's amazing looking through them. I want to scan them all. Would take ages though. But they really should be saved digitally too.
 
You don't have to donate them. You can "loan" them to the local historical society as a collection. Then, if anything ever turns out to be valuable, you still retain ownership.

Unless you want to research the subject of each picture, you won't know if any of them are worth anything. As a group, I wouldn't expect them to sell for much. But if you give them to a group that likes to do research, someone else may discover that they are valuable for you.
 
"Negro guides not wanted on this river" - I think that any historical civil rights group would want to preserve that picture in their collection. Maybe not worth a lot of money - but very valuable from a historical perspective.
 
So, do u guys want to see more? Only one person asked. Ill do it though it hurts to get up and down to scan them if more people chime in.

I don't want to put you out, or make you uncomfortable, but I'd love to see more pictures. My suggestion would be zipping them up as groups, and putting them up for download as a group. Do it as you get the motivation, and bump the thread as you get them uploaded.
