ADD is a farce, a fallacy and just plain psychobabble

contrived by those who wish to make a fast buck off weak minded individuals, particulary atheists

"To my eyes, the best strategy often turns out to be a combination of enhanced nutritional support, the creation of a more nurturing atmosphere at home, and a more responsive learning situation at school. The human body and spirit are designed with a basic intelligence, and often respond exquisitely to loving attention and a healthy lifestyle. Human beings can be beautiful, creative, and powerful, but need support and the opportunity for self-expression. When we provide a nurturing environment and diet for children, many of the problems that otherwise tend to be treated by pharmaceutical interventions simply disappear. I have a hard time seeing so many children drugged, and yet it is certainly not my intention to condemn the many parents or teachers who mean well for their youngsters and have given them Ritalin. Often they have been directed to do so by medical authorities, whom they have been taught to trust. Often they have known no other course to take. One uncontrollable child can so disrupt a whole class that learning becomes impossible for everyone involved. There are parents and teachers who are at their wit's end, and many who do not have the time, information, or financial resources to make adequate positive changes. And there are certainly some children for whom the judicious and temporary use of Ritalin has value, bringing at least a semblance of normalcy and unending vicious cycles in which they have become caught. And just what are your research credentials?

What are yours?

He is not pretending to disprove a medical problem, and you are, so I wonder who the burden of proof is on?

I'm not going to get into the fray here and I don't know what spurned FelixDeKat to go on this rant but I have to agree with him that ADD is for the most part a crock of ****.

You reduce yourself to ad hominem remarks to conceal your capricious (and frivolous) behavior.

ADD is real.

But (imho) tagging a child with that term and throwing Ritalin at them is a crutch that is used all too often. It is a (relatively) easy way out to deal with a child that is not 100% perfect.

Many times (again, imho) poor parenting is to blame for kids who act out, desperate for attention. These days of kids being shoved into day care where they have to compete for attention, and hardly see their parents, doesn't help either.

You're right, and ADD is overprescribed, but I don't believe the fundamental idea behind it is wrong. I don't think the majority of people needs meds at all. They need to realize they don't do things as well as they could, and then start changing their behavior and lifestyle to combat their problem. It is just like any other medical/social/mental problem. You can't just fix it with a pill..

ADD really stands for Apathetic Discipline Disorder......all kids are born with it and the ones who get much into school age with it have either sh!tty parents, sh!tty teachers, or both.
