Adblock vs Adblock plus

It looks like there are 2 filtering addons for browsers.
The earlier adblock was said to have turned rogue by changing its open source model and phoning home a unique-id and other user details:

The new adblock has also been accused of selling out and taking money from large corps to display their ads, google being one of them. Its hard to refuse money from google as even on AT, certain topics about google is controlled/censored.

I still use adblockplus, which do you use?

You actually know very little about why a topic is off limits....
 
ublock on chrome... adblock plus with element hiding helper on firefox. The first ad blocker that adds filters for those annoying popup javascript overlays automatically so I don't have to block them manually with element blockers will get my usage.

What adblock plus does to try and generate a bit of revenue for itself is relatively benign. You've been using something to make life on the internet bearable for years without donating to them and have the nerve to complain when they add a feature designed to make them a bit of cash, a feature that can easily be turned off in the settings?

In any case there are now several competitors... one of them should start blocking javascript overlays on all sites and they can take my money. I suppose I'm a hypocrite wanting to block those nasty overlays because those sites are just trying to make money... they don't want to do all that work for free and have server costs... I guess I'm not a perfect human being after all. 🙂

It's still being developed, both by Gorhill, and Chris something or other. That's why I said it's weird. It was abandoned to Chris, and then forked by Gorhill. I haven't made the time to figure out what's going on, but I'm still using the Gorhill version uBlock0(new name) updated two days ago.
 
Hmm... where do you get ublock0 and is the original ublock abandoned now? what if we keep using it?

I'm on mobile right now, so research with links is kind of tedious. There's 2 active versions currently. The original uBlock which got turned over to a different dev, and uBlock0 which gorhill forked from the original(used to be his!).

At this point in time, they're almost exactly the same AFAIK. Going forward??? I don't know. In either case, either version should work as it does now until it doesn't. IOW, if you're happy with the way it works, it should continue to do so until Mozilla breaks compatibility with a future update. Which version imroves more over time can only be told when the future comes.
 
Thanks for posting! Please keep us posted on any new developments you hear about or if one of the versions is discontinued or lags behind.

EDIT - from what I gather, ublock0 will probably be the one to go with in the future and will be updated more.
Also, if you get it from github, the extension will automatically update in firefox still, correct?

Sorry, I didn't see this until today. I don't think uBlocko is on AMO. Your lists will update on their own, but you'll have to go to github for program updates.
 
I use ABE. I like it mainly because it doesn't "allow" the ads it "likes," and is easy to disable on sites like AT, that I want to support.
