Donald, I understand where you're coming from.
But to blame the game itself, to call it inherently bad, is a mistake. The type of game is generally determined by the players in it and the referee ("dungeon master", since you're a neophyte).
I have been in games that could have been stories straight out of heroic legend . . . struggling to defend a kingdom against the forces of evil. The difference between the world of AD&D and the real world is the fact that our world is viewed in shades of gray. The world of AD&D is black and white. People are either good or evil, and generally, when they're evil, they're completely evil.
Are there games like the ones the article describes? Sure, but they're usually populated by people like the Columbine killers, and they're in the vast minority.
