I haven't played in a few months (though reading this thread has really been giving me the itch to start up again), but the problem I always found with melee builds is that the de-synchs WILL eventually catch up to you. Once you've played for a while you learn all the tricks to minimize your potential for de-synchs, but you can't avoid them entirely and all it takes is one bad one to do you in for good. I'm speaking strictly in the case of HC characters of course (which is all I play). If you are doing softcore, then its not that big an issue.

I've never played HC on any games, just not my style. I'd make it to MAYBE level 30. I do like that your character just gets moved instead of deleted like in most games. I agree with de-sync. It does get annoying but it's not really enough to make me rage. I take into account I paid nothing for the game and it gives me a lot, so I can handle it. I love that this game has short leagues, I will never play standard with the exception of in between leagues to burn my currency messing with builds.

This game just brings me back to my D2 games, which is easily up there on my top 5 favorite games of all times. I put a lot of hours into Diablo 3...but again and again after a week or so I am just so let down. It is just...SO dumbed down from what it used to be. I am a casual player but even I can hang in PoE, which is a really punishing game. Diablo 3 is just...grinding for the sake of grinding. Really no end reward and nothing to do once your build is complete. You really can't even run alts in that game... since there is only 1-2 viable builds that will last in T6 and GRifts. I am just so dissapointed in that whole development team.

I love that the GGG is so interactive with their community. Chris Wilson really really engages on the lowest level with players, and keeps them in a loop on a lot of things. You don't really see that from game maker companies these days.

I was never a fan of HC either until POE. The fact that my char got moved to SC helped me get over my initial 'fear of losing all my progress', but once I actually started playing HC I realized there is just an extra level of intensity that I love about it. I never touched SC again, despite the ungodly amount of currency I must have stashed in there by now (though I suspect most of the very expensive gear on those chars is no longer worth nearly as much now after all of the patches and new builds, new gear, etc, since the last time I played).

Yea, I'm in the same boat. I played this game off and on for almost a year in the temporary softcore leagues until a friend asked me if I wanted to roll on HC just for a fun, I haven't played on softcore since.

The intensity that HC brings is great and really ruined softcore for me. The idea that there is just no possible end to the characters on softcore just doesn't do it for me now.

You can hit maps in two or three days anyway, or sooner for some people. You can save some of the good gear up along the way for your next toon. Also items seem to have more value in HC because when someone dies the items leave the league with them.

weapon based characters are more gear dependent but will likely scale better late game

spell based characters are less gear dependent but won't scale as well end game

Flameblast still good enough to demolish for quite a while

poe.trade has made trading much more accessible

Exile Masters has made self found much more viable

My previous (before Masters) self found 91 Marauder disagrees with you.

My current self found 88 Marauder disagrees that his spell damage scales poorly 'end game'. The two Palace maps I ran today (lvl 78) with my self found dual flame totem Maruader only resulted in maybe 4 chaos worth of items, but were easy mode.

In Atziri I get owned, because I can't focus my totems. That is the ONLY reason; the trio I get swarmed. A phys Ranger Puncture build can easily dance around and Puncture win that fight; maybe why you think the right geared end game melee is better?

My 92 EK Scion (spell based) literally owns my buddy's 88 50k dps Ranger; because she never dies. I see him die on reflect all the time, while I soldier on the millions of exp to the next level.

Point; don't disregard spell damage just because a Ranger build can clear the screen easily in late end game. I have a Puncture/Tornado shot Ranger.

Mind linking the build to your EK Scion? Is it CoC?

Just installed the game again and haven't played in 1.5 years. I apparently have a lvl 75 witch with no gear and a lvl 76 duelist with a lightning arrow build. Can anyone recommend a decent duelist bow build I should look into? My bow is a 5l 107-262 phy damage bow.

I actually can't think of any Duelist builds. They get so little love.

Finally revived the Pledge of Hands Arc build. Not terrible, especially with Herald of Lightning and Ice with Curse on Hit. Never considered that option before! It is pretty nice for auto cursing. Need more crit though. And maybe a Shavs.

Just downloaded this game, logged about 3 hours, am lvl 12 witch.

Going for a fireball based build. I see a few different builds out there based around it, one seems to be more elemental based, and the other seems to be crit/physical damage based. From what I've seen on reddit, more people seem to favor the crit/phys. build.

I'm basically only getting builds from highly viewed youtube vids. I honestly have no clue what I am doing if I were to make a custom build myself.

As far as witch goes, what gear and skills should be focused on? As far as defensive gear goes, should I be focusing on armor rating or evasion?

Here is a fireball witch guide from the forums.

As far as defense goes you would be using the Arctic Armour skill, you will need to have high mana-regen to maintain it while moving.

Don't worry about trying to make a build yourself yet...just follow some guides until you get an idea what is going on. Your first few builds will be a learning experience...don't expect do be great right away:) I've been playing for a year or more and still learn something new every day.

Whisper @crowdog to contact me in game if ya have any questions!

The Wiki is a great resource. Some early useful info to look up on the wiki are the vendor recipes.

Sweet thanks!!

Since item drops are just kind of random... Would I want to have in my item load out for defense stuff? Focus on armor...Evasion...Energy shield?

Also, I will read the wiki page for info, but is there a certain time/weapons to use the orbs and other items on? I keep hearing youtubers talk about currency and I feel like orbs get brought up during that convo.

Edit: Also, is there a way to fast travel to my last active waypoint from the town? I couldn't figure it out. So I just ran to the mud flats or whatever the name of the place in Act 1 where I had the closest active waypoint, then fast traveled to the waypoint I needed to go.

Thanks...now I want to play again...

But I don't know why, I never seem to get past the second village (Act 2?)...I always lose interest around that part of the game...

And, id like to know from endgame players, what is the endgame offer? Is it like Diablo 3 where everything can be done solo but in group you get better loot?

PoE is more about building your character(s) and playing around the various game mechanics; most builds don't feel "complete" until lvl75+, it does require a good deal of patience and learning to get through earlier parts of the game.

http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Partying you do get better loot in parties.

I lonewolf 99% of the time because most of my guild are from EU & I dislike dealing with public group hijinks. The game itself has improved a lot to become more solo friendly since the introduction of Forsaken Masters and several QoL changes, it's very feasible to complete the majority of contents with little to no trading.

After lvl60ish you run maps, they're basically beefed-up leveling zones with an unique boss(es) at the end but players can add affixes to increase the difficulty in exchange for more possible item drops.

Then there's also Atziri, an iconic endgame encounter like Diablo himself that challenges players' mechanical skills(or you can just overgear and facetank it the old fashion way.)

Wow that sounds cool. Best way to experience this will be to level a character to 75+...which might never happen lol

Thanks for the info!

Eh, it might not take you as long as you think. Or even if it does, maybe you'll enjoy it. I've played for maybe.. 4-5 hours now and I think I'm lvl 13 or 14.

Also, is there any really compelling reason to do quests that aren't along the main path? Anything worth while come about other than some XP?

It was two leagues ago so I don't have a link to how it is currently setup, but no, it is a non-crit build. I rarely even play it anymore, since I'd rather play in a league with a fresh economy instead of standard.

I started a melee duelist cyclone build with leap slam this time, as my first melee. The lag isn't bad, but getting 'stuck' on things or having things in the path of my cyclone is unbelievably aggravating.

I'm also not sure how good it will be end game (76+ maps and Atziri), because at 62ish with a 225-480ish damage weapon, it still takes time to kill. Shows me around 3k damage in the tooltip, but my flame totem guy with 3.5k damage clears about 20 times as fast.

It takes about 10-15 hours for veteran players to get lvl60, naturally the more you learn the more efficient you'll be.

Most of the side quests are not critical, you can always go back later unless you really need that respec point or whatnot.

Yeah I played like.. another 1-2hrs over the past 2 days and I think I'm lvl17 now? Someplace around there, so that puts me at probably 5-6hrs played.

Is XP linearly applied? ie, it takes y XP per level, or is it like lvl 1 = 10xp needed, lvl 2 = 20 xp, lvl 3 = 40XP etc etc?

For a solo melee character, is the Templar a good choice?
It looks fun and the red/blue skill gems look neat.

Templar is very good for melee builds. There are some really good nodes in the templar area that allow you to shock/freeze/ignite enemies. You also have the ability to easily reach the marauder and duelist areas. What skill are you thinking of focusing on? Static Strike is a lot of fun.

I don't really know but last time I played I gone to near level 20 before quitting and had my Templar focusing on Frost damage/Icing/slowing enemies and it was fun enough. Maybe i'll try some fire build next time...dunno yet.

I haven't really gone on the POE forum or the wikia yet, but can anybody summarize the most popular or typical builds per each class?

So far I've seen things like "Blender build" using Duelist, which seem to be popular.

Right now I'm a level ~25 witch, focusing on Fireball. Since I'm still fairly young in the tree, I think I may still be able to choose between a pure physical/elemental build, or a crit build. From what I've seen, crit is a little bit more expensive & gear dependent?

I've been loosely following LiftingNerd's "Carpet Bomber" guide on Youtube.

Path of Exile announced their newest expansion on Friday. It sounds pretty awesome and includes the following and more...

A fourth Act with 9 new boss fights
New item base "jewels" that can be socketed into the skill tree
70 new unique items (20 jewels)
13 new skill gems
Several quality of life improvements (Devs are optimistic about new netcode fixing desync)

There will be a 1-2 month closed beta for this and you can sign up/find more information over at their website.

----------------------------------------
I'm pretty excited for this. I've always been a fan of new content releases, but the QoL improvements are HUGE this time around. After burning out on Diablo season 3 in less than 3 hours this is much needed news.

Their netcode "fix" is to remove prediction IIRC. So, you won't desync, you will wait for your client to catch up to the server. This is going to be a huge deal for anyone with crap internet.

I am still looking forward to some changes though. I imagine they are going to nerf CoC builds again, but whatever. I am looking forward to the respec. I pretty much ruined a character going from CoC Spectral Throw to a Crit based Ice Arrow build. I could spend the money on regrets, but no thanks.
