Not too many people get to cross this or see it. If a cruise is in your next vacation plans, consider an itinerary that includes the Panama Canal!

I don't think I've ever installed any codecs on this machine and WMP10 played it fine.

That said, that was COOL! Like a boat FPS! :D

Music was cool too.

I liked how when they were coming to the locks a crowd of people showed up on the bow of the boat. After they went through they all dissapeared till they come to the next locks and the bridge. I guess the hell with looking at the country around there but the locks going up and down is the shite.

I forget everything I learned in Global Issues in middle school... what are locks for again? I know they raise and lower the ships, but why are they there?

Because the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean have different depths, and if they just dug the canal and let the water flow, the nation of Panama would quickly be underwater.

Also, VERY COOL video. You can see that there's rain during it, which is why all the people disappear. When they come back out, they all have umbrellas.

Ooooh now I see. I guess I just needed a mental picture to understand it.

What?!?

Panama wouldn't be underwater if a canal was dug from the Pacific to the Atlantic with no locks. Locks are used to raise the ships above sea level. The higher you get the ship, the less you have to dig for the canal. They were trying to use an existing lake in panama to cut down on the amount of digging they would have to do, so they probably just made the locks so they would raise the ships to the level of the lake.

The canal cannot accommodate the largest freighters as well and there is talk of building a second one. Of course many political hurdles are in the way. Some believe the only effective way to do the dredging would be to use nuclear explosives!

For size reference, the "boat" the camera was on is a cruise ship owned by RCL.

Radiance of the Seas Spec:

LOA 961
BEAM 105
DISP 88,000
SPEED 24

There's no room for "mistakes" when going through these locks on a ship of this size.

That vid needs benny hill music.

LOL, I miss those episodes! :)
