Do all big ships navigate in big chunks like that?

I dunno, the video makes it seem like the turns are sharp rather than smooth or something..

The transistions look very abrupt due to the ratio. It's very gradual. Lots of maneuvering. Thank goodness for azipods and bow thrusters.

If a ship moved 1/10 as abrupt as that, people would fly around like beanie babies tossed into the cooling tower. (guilty) 😛

Do you know how much $$$ in wine would be lost? :Q

A gradual list of twenty degrees over a period of ten minutes is enough to empty the pools to the point where the water begins to short out stuff. I've heard on some ships of water going down the elevator shafts from overflowing pools. Now that's a nasty surprise!

This kind of thing is unusual on a cruise but it can (and will!) happen.

EDIT: Glad to hear the video works in WMP10. I have limited capacity to "play" with this stuff but if it runs on my lappy I'm sure it's golden here. 🙂 I have a wireless connection with the mainland (Nassau) now so it's actually not tortorous to type out a long reply. 🙂

Except the captain is a n00b. He needs to learn to strafe

LOL now all we need is some of the videoshop guys to put a turret on the bow, come up with a border from one of the popular FPS's with the dropdown screen including typing of timedemo demo001 etc.

A few tie fighters inbound getting shot down would be nice too.

At the end it could show a benchmark in millions of gallons per second!

I liked how when they were coming to the locks a crowd of people showed up on the bow of the boat. After they went through they all dissapeared till they come to the next locks and the bridge. I guess the hell with looking at the country around there but the locks going up and down is the shite.

Near me are the Locks on the Hudson river, and the Mohawk river.

They are neat to watch,a ship,or barge go thru.

I have gone thru on a 14 foot fiberglass pleasure boat, alone it was a lot of work.

The St Lawrence seaway locks are Huge, prob about the same size as the
Panama canal locks.I have seen ships use them also. 🙂

Come on in and sing along with us! 🙂

I've got an old mule and her name is Sal
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
She's a good old worker and a good old pal
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
We've hauled some barges in our day
Filled with lumber, coal, and hay
And we know every inch of the way
From Albany to Buffalo

Low bridge, everybody down
Low bridge for we're coming to a town
And you'll always know your neighbor
And you'll always know your pal
If you've ever navigated on
The Erie Canal

We'd better look around for a job, old gal
Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
You bet your life I wouldn't part with Sal
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal
Giddap there gal, we've passed that lock
We'll make Rome 'bout six o'clock
One more trip and then we'll go
Right back home to Buffalo

Low bridge, everybody down
Low bridge, I've the finest mule in town.
Once a man named Mike McGinty
Tried to put it over Sal
Now he's way down on the bottom of
The Erie Canal

Oh, where would I be if I lost my pal?
Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
Oh, I'd like to see a mule as good as Sal
Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
A friend of mine once made her sore
Now, he's got a broken jaw
'Cause she let fly with her iron toe
And kicked him into Buffalo.

Low bridge, everybody down,
Low bridge, I've the finest mule in town.
If yo're looking for trouble
Better stay away from Sal
She's the only fightin' donkey on the Erie Canal

I don't want to call when I want my Sal
Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
She trots from her stall like a good old gal,
Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
I eat my meals with Sal each day,
I eat beef and she eats hay
She ain't so slow if you want to know
She put the "Buff" in Buddalo.

Low bridge, everybody down,
Low bridge, I've the finest mule in town
Eats a bale of hay for dinner
And on top of that, my Sal
Tries to drink up all the water in the Erie Canal.

I forget everything I learned in Global Issues in middle school... what are locks for again? I know they raise and lower the ships, but why are they there?

to raise and lower the ships... 😀

Wish they had stuff like this for places all over the world. I would love to see hardly-inhabited places with flyovers...

Because the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean have different depths, and if they just dug the canal and let the water flow, the nation of Panama would quickly be underwater.

Also, VERY COOL video. You can see that there's rain during it, which is why all the people disappear. When they come back out, they all have umbrellas.

Ooooh now I see. I guess I just needed a mental picture to understand it.

Example for you
