This is what I would do, and this is what I've done:

1) Go to a store that specializes in wines and beer. Most cities have them. This isn't likely to be your average liquor store as they won't have much of what you'll need. Stores like Wild Oats and Whole Foods often have a reasonable selection as well.

2) Buy a pint of something for every style you can find. I say buy a pint for a few reasons, but primarily because the better beers tend to come in pints and not regular-sized bottles (and certainly not cans, although some microbrews are indeed shipping in cans these days--they have a method of preventing that metallic taste); well, at least not in a six-pack.

3) Treat the beer like a wine, because a good beer can be as complex as a good wine. Use a proper glass (i.e. not a Dixie cup), serve at proper temperature (depends on the beer, but ice cold isn't always the right temperature; see this for more information), and really pay attention to what you're drinking. Maybe it smells like butterscotch (diacetyl), caramel malts, chocolate, dried fruits, citrusy, or even herbaceous? Take note of these things, as it's this that will ultimately educate your palate.

4) Take notes.

That's it. Doing all of the above repetitively will ultimately lead you to at least one conclusion: You like beer or you don't, but your palate will be more educated either way.

For what it's worth, my favorite beer styles tend to be Belgian, so some of my favorite breweries are: Allagash, Ommegang (love them), Westvleteren, Konigshaven, St Bernardus, Orval, Westmalle (my favorite trappist), Chimay, Scaldis, Delerium Tremens, and probably more that I can't remember.

Enjoy!

Men should act like men, and not drink light beer.

I am 22 and had my first beer the week i left highschool. I HATED it. It was all i could do from throwing up it tasted so bad. For years as a kid i hated when my dad drinked(he doesnt get drunk..just drinks a beer at night or something)cause his breathe smelled so bad. After that week I tried it again and it still sucked. I then went to college and yup...drank some mroe ****** beer there as well. I still cant drink busch cause it was my first beer and was so bad.

Fastforward to now. I LOVE beer. My progression..

Naddy light...****** beers...
Rolling rock....I actually thought this was "high end, or good beer" at one point.
Sapporo....I still love this beer.
Sam Adams kind fo beers.....
and now i love the microbrew. The more Hops the better....You give me a good IPA or Amber Ale I will drink it all lol.
I am now starting to get into weizens...very refreshing.

I've gotten a few girls drinking beer that wouldn't have otherwise. I started them on Apricot Wheat. The apricot really comes out in this. If I were you I'd say start with some exotic fruit beers, the ladies definitely liked em. :)

woo...thanks for all the help people...and i'm sorry for my horrid spelling/typing skills... :p

anywho...firstly, people who said coffee tastes bad...i dunno wtf your talking about...ive loved coffee since my first sip, no lie. although i cant stand some cheap vaccum brick coffee w/o sugar/cream >_< annnnywho...

i'm getting together with some old friends this weekend...he really likes yuengling ...supposed to be the oldest brewed beer...hell i dunno...he wasnt much of a fan of beer either, he is now getting used to it and says he likes yuengling a lot. so...i'm making the beer run on the way into town and he wants to me to pick everything up...currently, i have some jeger&redbull i'm bringing...going to pick up some smirnoff...and at least a 6pack of yuengling...but since it is all up to me...what kind of yuengling should i get? they have: premium, light, lager, porter, ale, blk&tan, and light lager...all availaible in my local walmart/liquor store...also...should i just pick up a pack of something and force myself to drink it (there will be food, so it wont be too bad) if so, should i get some yuengling? or just try his and get myself a pack of something.

i have tried some of the things you all suggest. ive had carona & lime...it wasnt as bad as budL or natty...but i didnt like it that much...i had some guiness (sp?) and if i remeber i enjoyed it moreso than any other beer i've had...someone suggest fruity beers...what brand and flavor would you suggest?

currently...my plan is to get his 6pack...get my own...try some of his...and force myself to finish at least 2 beers (i figure i can force myself to finish more and more each time) hopefully more though, since ill be eating at the same time. if i dont finish them, ill just take them home and force myself to drink a beer during the week or something like that. if it turns out i cant finish more than 2 beers...ill switch to some smirnoff and jagerbombs till i get a good buzz...then switch back to the beer...

i think most of my problem is that ive just been telling myself (and others) that i hate beer...i'm trying to force the thought out of my mind and just ready myself to get over it...

again, thanks for the tips :)

edit:
i dunno if this will help identify my taste buds...but as far as hard alchohol goes...i LOVE makers mark, captn, and captn tattoo
