ack... vesting period sucks...

Honestly, I never saw myself staying anywhere long enough to worry about vested interest. The thought of being held down at a single company such that it limited my choices was never appealing.

I'm self-employed, so obviously I don't have anyone to match anything (unless I setup such a plan, but that wouldn't make any sense); however, I do have a 401k, IRA and various other deductible accounts that I can use to significantly lower my tax liability. In the end it works out to be more than I would otherwise have with company matching.

Just have to find what works best. Sometimes there are options better than what your employe offers, and this is usually why I always went for compensation over benefits. If you can't/don't want to run the numbers yourself a good accountant and/or financial planner should be able to calculate the difference over a long timeframe.

The only knowledge is first hand. I understand the move from pension plans to better 401k packages. But IMHO, the better benefits are from companies that offer both and it can't be denied that larger companies offer better french benefits. So yes, I'm surprised there is no pension with a half arsed 401k plan. Either the company offers a knock out 401k or a knock out pension, or a blend of both to stay competative.

But like I said earlier, it's all part of a total compensation package.

100% matching up to 4%, no vesting period for the 401k, no waiting period to invest.

My company still has a pension plan too (vested after 3 years) - we'll see how long until that goes away.
