Honestly, I never saw myself staying anywhere long enough to worry about vested interest. The thought of being held down at a single company such that it limited my choices was never appealing.
I'm self-employed, so obviously I don't have anyone to match anything (unless I setup such a plan, but that wouldn't make any sense); however, I do have a 401k, IRA and various other deductible accounts that I can use to significantly lower my tax liability. In the end it works out to be more than I would otherwise have with company matching.
Just have to find what works best. Sometimes there are options better than what your employe offers, and this is usually why I always went for compensation over benefits. If you can't/don't want to run the numbers yourself a good accountant and/or financial planner should be able to calculate the difference over a long timeframe.
