Acid Reflux

Hacp

Lifer
How do you deal with this? I have tried tums but it doesn't work for me. Any other suggestions?

The 14 day course of Prilosec helped me. But it might be worth seeing a doctor first, since acid reflux can be a symptom of something more serious, like a pancreatic condition.

I assume you've tried the dietary solutions, like no more coffee, less sodium, etc?

I got something like this too... really bad heartburn occasionally.

Sometimes everyday, it sucks.

I take Zantac and Pepcid back and forth.

I was going to try the Prilosec soon.

If you take Prilosec it may take a few days to really take effect. Don't eat anything until about 30 minutes after you take it or you could get heartburn before it kicks in.

I've had to take it daily for years. If I forget to take it then ANYTHING will give me heartburn. Sucks.

i use maximum strength zantec 150, i take one before the meal and one after. but mostly i watch what i eat. you have to cut down on acid foods. red meat, carbonated beverages, anything with tomatoes these are just a few things you need to avoid if possible.

prilosec. used to be i would get a months supply for $10. then they decided to make it over the counter so now its $15 for a 14 day supply. bastards.

I used to suffer from similar pains and it was ongoing for 5 years before a nurse at our college campus was smart enough to draw my blood to have me tested for the H-Pylori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori) bacteria. I was a broke student back then so when the results came back positive, she hooked me up with a bunch of free sample packets that did the job to kill the bacteria.

I think it's a 3 step process.
Anti Acid until it heals the lining
Pills to kill the bacteria
and Lastly a set of pills to flush it out.

I recommend getting a blood test to see if this is the case. It's well worth it to check because if it's positive, it's "curable" rather than something you have to learn to live with.

Well its heartburn every day if I eat something spicy or just regular food some days.

Are you a heavy coffee drinker? What about booze? None of what has been suggested so far worked for me. Prevacid did though, and now you can get it without a prescription. Get some, and once you have it under control, start working on getting the stuff that is causing it out of your life.

The purple pill, of course. TV was deluged with commercials for it a few years ago.

Don't eat for a few hours before bedtime. Change your diet. Lose some weight.

Pepcid AC 20mg 2x per day. This is available at costco for extremely cheap (kirkland brand), apparently lots of people re-sell kirkland stuff on ebay.

Add 4 regular strength rolaids if/when you have an "incident".

i take 150 mg of generic Zantac twice a day
works well for me
costco has 190 tablets for $8.69

I've heard that famotidine is easier on your system long term (vs. ranitidine). That's what my doc told me, at least.

Something about not interfering with your liver's processing as much. I found this on wiki :
(Famotidine)

Unlike cimetidine, the first H2 antagonist, famotidine has no effect on the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, and does not appear to interact with other drugs.[1]
(Ranitidine)
Ranitidine has 10% the affinity that cimetidine has to CYP450 so it causes fewer side effects, but other H2 blockers famotidine and nizatidine have no CYP450 significant interactions.[1]
You might want to do some research and/or ask your doc.

I was on famotidine for 5 years, at 10mg 2x/day, then 20mg, then 40mg, then 80mg. Then I got out of college, got a real doctor, found that it was really an extremely bad antibiotic resistant H.Pylori infection. Apparently your acid is your line of defense, so taking the drugs actually made it worse for me, better for the bacteria, even though it relieved my symptoms completely. Went on multiple courses of different, strong-ass antibiotics, which fixed the problem after 6 months. Getting off the acid reflux drugs hurt because my esophagus was not used to hardly any acid at all. But it's worth it. I can eat normally now (could not before on the drugs), and feel much better in general.

If you have Gerd they will proscribe you a series of medications.

There are two family's for stomach acid. One's that attach to the stomach lining and others that stop the stomach from producing acid.

I have been dealing with GERD since I was a child at 14, my experience is definitely first hand. I tried prilosec, propsulid, nexium, zantac, protonix. The only effective medicine to date has been protonix. The other medications felt as if they made it worse.

Change your eating habits, elevate your bed, getting a larger pillow and do not eat anything after 8:00pm. If you go to a doctor be prepared to hear the exact same thing said to you. They will also do an endoscopy as a precaution. If it is determined you have GERD, they will prescribe you a list of medicine from above.
