The left left of it had "only" after EZpass.

There was no clerk.

How can I minimize impact of fines?

I extended may hand outside of my windshield holding a 5 dollar bill.

I'm surprised the US hasn't adopted ETR technology yet. The toll highway here doesn't have booths. It's 100% automated. Has been since it was built in the late 90s.

You made the mistake of only showing a 5, they want to see nothing less than 20s. Expect a drone strike within the hour for non-payment.

you could have gone in reverse and gone to the cashier and told them the situation.

The best thing about that highway is if your US state doesn't have a reciprocal agreement with Ontario, you can't be billed. And since there is no way to pay cash, I guess it's free.

I didn't actually know that in advance, but since it's been 9 months from the time I drove the 407 ETR, I'm assuming no bill is going to ever show up.

Depending on where you live, they just automatically send a fine to the person who owns the plates. My brother borrowed my car & accidentally went through the EZ Pass lane and I got like a $54 bill randomly a month or so later

I don't know about your area, but here they have a number you can call and if you pay the toll within 7 days you will not get fined.

A long time ago I made the mistake thinking I could pay in cash too. I stopped at the toll and realized I only had like 10 cents in pennies. I threw it in but it wasn't enough to cover it and just drove off.

Never got a ticket in the mail ever.

Go to the toll authority webpage, they should have form for "pay missed toll" at least they used to have a system in IL for if you missed a single toll you could pay it and not be fined.

They do, at least going towards Chicago they do. Indiana still has booths even though they use the EZpass thing too. They're just cheap fucks and haven't updated their tech.

For aesthetics and transferring the ezpass transponder between 3 cars, I don't keep it stuck on the windshield but hold it up as we go through. So this would be a problem for me.

Srsly, why are toll roads even legal?

Quite often they're paid for and maintained by private outfits. Or there's at least some sort of cost sharing arrangement. So the taxes spent on those roads are reduced at the expense of the people who actually drive on those roads.

It's not a horrible criminal offense. The camera got your plate, and they will send the vehicle owner a bill for the toll and a small fee.

The cops WILL show up at your door...or your workplace...and haul you to jail in handcuffs...fucking scofflaw!

You can probably bail out...if you have enough cash or collateral to cover the bond required.

 Of course, you COULD always call the appropriate toll authority, explain, and ask to pay by phone...but that would be too simple.

I got on the PA turnpike at an EZ pass on ramp.

They charged me for the whole length when I got off at my exit.

$38.00

I went about 5 miles...

Might not be all that small. EZPass has been abused a lot, so the fines have been creeping upward. A $50 fine and a $25 processing fee would not be impossible.
