Wouldn't you only get fined once you failed to pay the toll? We did something similar, got a bill in the mail, paid it and it was good. Maybe there was a fine rolled in, I don't recall.I don't know about your area, but here they have a number you can call and if you pay the toll within 7 days you will not get fined.
I'm surprised the US hasn't adopted ETR technology yet. The toll highway here doesn't have booths. It's 100% automated. Has been since it was built in the late 90s.

Did that once cause I don't keep transponder in window. Got a letter in the mail and given a chance to pay just a little over the toll without fine.
Where you will learn the true meaning of a violator using the wrong lane without permission.
