Might not be all that small. EZPass has been abused a lot, so the fines have been creeping upward. A $50 fine and a $25 processing fee would not be impossible.

It probably varies by state, but in NJ it's not bad. My daughters have gotten me a few of those letters. I think it was always like the toll + $10.

"Small" is highly subjective, some of those are controlled by private entities and are free to bend you over.

I don't know about your area, but here they have a number you can call and if you pay the toll within 7 days you will not get fined.

Wouldn't you only get fined once you failed to pay the toll? We did something similar, got a bill in the mail, paid it and it was good. Maybe there was a fine rolled in, I don't recall.

We were on the PA turnpike and our TomTom was bleating, stay left, stay left, stay left as we approached a toll booth. We were surrounded by tractor-trailer rigs and I kept moving left and moving left, (ridiculous in retrospect as Tommy didn't really know I was changing lanes - duh). Suddenly, I realized that I was in the ez-pass lane. Too late of course. We got a nice picture in the mail of the front and back of the car along with the bill. I was able to pay it online.

I know in IL they have a place you can pay online within a certain amount of time to avoid fines. I once went through a toll without realizing it in a rental car and got a $50 fine like a year later.

In Texas, they use license plate readers and mail you a bill for the toll, but you can get a transponder in a sticker that attaches to your windshield for a discounted rate.

Same. It costed them more in postage and paper to send the letter than what the toll was.

I tried it again later but drove it for a good 10 miles and they tacked on a $25 fine. But they'd clear up the fine if you bought a transponder, which I did since I was planning on getting one anyways.

Toll roads are built and maintained by a private company that negotiates toll rates with the government. Your taxes don't pay for the construction or maintenance of them. The tolls pay for them.

By using private financing to build a road instead of taxpayer funding it puts the risks and liability of long-term maintenance and upkeep into the hands of the private sector and doesn't leave taxpayers on the hook to pay taxes for construction and maintenance, rather that cost is borne by the private sector and paid for only by the people who use the road, via tolls.

No, we've had it for a long time, it just never took off since most POS terminals only have a swipe.

I had a chip and PIN card in 2002 (Target Visa). Another company was showing one on TV around the same time when advertising that clear card (I think it was an AmEx). I'm sure they were available for years already at that point.

Also, the system the OP is complaining about is ETR, which is why there was "no clerk."

It's illegal for Arkansas license plate info to be given out for any reason other than law enforcement so how is some private toll road operator going to bill me?

Chip and pin cards are for countries whose phone systems are too crappy to handle all of the data traffic from verifying the information on a credit cards magnetic stripe.
