Accidentally got DS3 965G instead of DS3 965P

I just wanted to check, has anybody tried overclocking with a standalone PCI express graphics card and onboard graphics disabled?
Is the chipset itself limited that much or only with graphics on?

Hmm, I wonder if using an add-in SATA card would allow mass overclocking. I got the thing up to 2.4GHz (on E6300) _easy_ before I noticed my stupid sata drives disappeared. I happen to have a few PCI sata cards around, and though it would be annoying maybe this is a solution for me. I'll try it tonight.

If you don't have a SATA card, they're dirt cheap so this may be a viable alternative. I will put this in a closet so don't care about onboard video issues, but this could be an issue for some.

I use a gf 7300 card, not a gamer so dont need faster.

With the stock northbridge cooler 300 FSB was as high as I could go, I installed an Abit active northbridge cooler from my just dead NI8-SLI(Small ORB type cooler) and now I can get to 316mhz FSB prime stable. 317 and above and both my serial ata hard drives dissapear.

Also I cannot adjust the PCI Express bus speed. If I set this to anyhing but auto the system fails to boot then resets back to default settings. I think this may be holding back FSB speeds, I wonder if the PCI Express lock is working or not. They do mention nvidia 7x00 series cards in the rev 2 BIOS notes, I am running the rev3 BIOS though.

In somewhat related news... I'm so sad... with my P-DS3, I had to finally give/sell it to my client before I got a chance to get the overclocking working 🙁 He thinks it's absurdly fast at stock, but I would have liked to see where I could take it.

Man... I want my own C2D system now... but I SOOO don't need an upgrade (points to sig). Maybe I'll wait for an affordable OC'able Kentsfield...

hi
im running the f2 bios on mine with an e6300. i have ddr 667 memory. i can OC to 333mhz easy from easytune but whenever i try from bios, i get a nasty beep, distorted bios screen, and then a reboot to stock. i tried upping my timings and my voltage but no luck. i don't see why i cant even run my memory at its rated 667/333. i have ocz 2gb gold 4-4-4-12 1.8v. im also running 1 sata on the intel port.
if i need to update my bios, can someone suggest how to do it from within windows?

Jcmuse, I would recommend updating your bios with a dos boot disc if you have a floppy drive. If not, create a boot cd with Nero.

I have the final F4 bios if you need it. Overclocking is about the same, Intel and Gigabyte are still working on few improvements, trying to hit 350FSB with SATA.

Don't feel bad. Newegg sent me a 965G instead of a 965P, and made a fuss about my returning it. They wouldn't cross ship, and initially refused to issue me a call tag so I didn't have to eat the $12 return shipping. Only after I made a real stink about it did they relent and give me a $10 credit for shipping.

Plus I now have a pissed off customer who needs his system TODAY as I promised and not next week. All because someone didn't read a label on the box right (or it was put into the wrong slot). ****** happens, I know, but the way they got all pissy about it even though it was their employee who made the error forces me to reconsider whether I ever order from them again.

I would also like to know where we are at on this- I too ordered the 965G from newegg.

Whats the skinny? Are we still dealing with the hardware limitations in the f4 bios build?

Anyone tried 965G-DS4? I have one and overclock is about the same. Are GiGaByte going to release a new bios with fixed PCI clock?

so looks like I am yet another who fell into the trap on new egg. My thought was hell the extra few bux for integrated video is great as a backup. Sure enough its come in handy as my pci-x xfx 6600gt card doesnt seem to be working. I just ordered an rma on newegg though and I gotta ship back the e6300 and 965g as a combo since thats how I got it.
My motherboard with f5 bios booted 350 fsb once and I had to reset the cmos to get back into it. Now I even have a hard time getting it to go near 300 and stay there. Seems if I want to do anything I have to leave the ram on auto as well and cant change the multiplier... even manually to what it automatically selected. Stable board at stock settings or a fsb of 275 (whoopie) but otherwhise im very disappointed as far as ANY overclocking goes. I'm amazed at how hot that northbridge gets, shame on gigabyte on their part because if I held my finger on that for a few seconds I'd surely blister... and thats with an idling system with no real load! I ordered a thermaltake silent heatpipe northbridge cooler today- no way id leave that terrible passive heatsink on.

Ram is ocz platinum 2x1gb ddr 800 4-4-4-15 @2.2v... Highly doubt that should be limiting me.

I picked up a P instead of G and an e6400 instead of an e6300 for the extra multiplier from newegg, gonna be shipping this one back on RMA. Took alot of talking to get them to waive the 15% but I managed to get them to.

*edit* so it looks like I managed to get this thing up more last night. FSB hit its wall at 312mhz... whoopdee doo. 312mhz is rock stable, 313 crashes instantly. 1.4v fed to cpu, after I hit the wall I also managed to drop the ram down from 5-5-5- to 4-4-4... +.1fsb, +.1 mch on stock northbridge cooler. looks like thats the best I can do till I get the next board in.

Hi, I read in some other forum that the 965G apparently was able to run with the F6 BIOS (I don?t know about F7) from the 965P with the only difference that the onboard video is disabled, has anybody done this? If true, would it be possible to run the system with a PCI-E Video Card and obtain the desired OC results?
Thank You.

Is the board still rubbish at overclocking? I noticed there is a new F7 bios on gigabytes website. i too have ordered this by mistake.

Yes, it is. I doubt future bioses will make things different.

Welcome to the club 🙁

BTW, I was able to overlock this board to work with FSB 400 MHz
by disabling onboard SATA/IDE controler and using cheap PCI IDE
controler instead (I am using IDE drives). However I was totaly not
successfull in setting even 1MHz (one) above 400 MHz.

I wonder if using external PCI-E graphics card will allow to go above
this magical barier

Interesting.

Doubtful.
I have this board. My friend and I dropped in a video card briefly to test it (he has lots of parts, and knows how to overclock well), but we were limited to under 300 mhz, because the PCI bus frequency isn't locked (and can't be on this board), so the hard drive refused to boot. If you ordered it by mistake, the best option is try to RMA quickly.
