Accidentally got DS3 965G instead of DS3 965P

Darn my lack of paying attention when shopping at the egg!

I know almost nothing of intel chipsets. This is my first c2d build. Does it matter if I got the 965G instead of 965P if I'm looking to overclock?

I've done some google and forum searching, but can't really seem to get an answer.

I got the same board, but I purposely chose it vs the 965P because it was the same price and has the built-in video that is VISTA compliant. It's nice to have if my regular videocard goes caput. As far as I know the two boards are completely identical except for that one addition. The built in video is disabled anyway if you have any videocard installed.

The other reason I got the 965G is that quite a few people (Newegg reviewers) were not able to post with OCZ rams installed on the 965P. This is a bios issue. I figured since the 965G is newer it would come with a newer bios preinstalled. I was correct on this and I was able to post with the OCZ just fine.

I just built this system just last night so didn't even have time to overclock. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't overclock just as well as the 965P, though. Truly the only way to find out is to setup your rig and try it.

Everyone shares in this issue, does not matter what board or memory supplier. I cannot tell you how many times we noticed both SPD and BIOS issues in the early going on the P965 boards.

Do you know if the F3 upgrade from 9/8 makes much of a difference for overclocking on this board?

I want to get this board too. The graphics can hold until DX10. I'm upgrading the whole system. How well does it oc?

For the life of me, I can't seem to have any success overclocking. It has the option to change FSB and multiplyer (6-8), but it doesn't matter what I change. The system just boots to windows with the default (266.7x8) as if it completely ignores the bios setting. The fact that I'm kind of a newbie at this makes it frustrating.

I don't know if the bios is similar, but try upgrading to the latest bios available, power down and on the first boot load bios optimized default.

In BIOS second screen disable the thermal features (C1E, EIST, etc)

Overclocking bios settings (MIT screen) PRESS CTRL-F1 before entering to show all options:
CPU Rate 8x
CPU Host ENABLED
CPU HOST FREQ 400
PCI-E 100 (or AUTO)
CIA2 DISABLED
System Memory Multiplier x2 (ADDED after EDIT)
DRAM TIMING MANUAL
CAS 5 (or CAS 4 if your RAM supports, same for the next 2 lines)
RAS TO CAS 5
RAS PRE 5
TRAS 15
ACT ACT DEL AUTO
RANK WRITE AUTO
WRITE TO PREC AUTO
REFRESH TO ACT 0
READ to PRE AUTO
MEMORY PERF NORMAL (try also FAST or TURBO)
DIMM OVERV +0.15V (you might need more, +0.30 is the max, but start lower first)
PCI-E OVERV NORMAL
GMCh OVERV +0.1V
FSB OVERV +0.1V
CPU OVERV 1.375V (try up to 1.40V also)

I learned that high VDim (2V or higher) does not help with certain types of DDR2 (like OCZ Platinum) - going with just 1.95V sometimes does the trick. If you are having issues, try something like this (VDim +0.15V ).

Good luck and let us know if it works 🙂

The bios is almost identical as far as I can tell. (MIT screen) PRESS CTRL-F1 gets all the option you mentioned.

I didn't change any of the OVERV settings, though. Do you recommend setting the CPU Host Freq to 400 at the start? I thought you're suppose to start low and build up.

I may just wait for the new bios that Gary Key is hinting at.

Did you change your memory to a 1:1 ratio before trying to overclock?

The 1:1 ratio Gary is mentioning refers to the MIT option:

System Memory Multiplier x2

I forgot to list this one on my previous post.

I tried stock just to be sure that the new build had no deffective component. After that I went straight to 400.

I used the settings you gave, tried going straight to 400. I used the settings you gave, also tried more dimm and cpu voltage, no luck. The board either hangs then comes up with the overclock set back to stock, or reboots with the stock setting applied. I'm using the patriot 667 memory that is supposed to be decent. egg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220095 Am I missing something to get this to work?

Overclocks that large are not garaunteed. Try dialing back the FSB.

I seem to have problems getting over 2.6ghz, trouble starts about 320. Even then, the board acts real quirky when I have the system reset. For instance, it pauses for a long period of time before posting or has to be manually powered off and on. Anyone have a suggestion or experience to share?

I hate to do this, but can you list out your components please.

Why the hate? 🙂

e6400 b2, big typhoon with as5, ds3 965g (f3 bios), patriot 2x1gb 667 PDC22G5300LLK 4-4-4-12, x-fi xtreme music, bbati x1900xt 512.

Whenever I go past 310, it no longer detects my sata drives. I bring it back to 310, they appear again. Random eh?

Did you leave PCI_E at 100?

Which ports are you using, orange or purple? Try moving to another one. Unplug also all USB devices not used, just for troubleshot.

My slots are yellow and red. Right now, I am in both of the yellow slots. I will change PCI_E back to 100 from auto and let you know.

I am not seeing any of this, let me take some screenshots later today so you can set the bios exactly in the same fashion I am doing. Did you do a fresh install of XP?
