Anyone change the CPU in a new Compaq Presario? Specifically the M2105US, which currently has a Sempron 2800. I have an AMD 64 3200 coming in the next few days. Do you have to remove the entire bottom of the case? It sure seems like it. Am I missing something? There doesn't appear to be an access door anywhere, like there is for the HD or memory....

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks for the quick reply bearxor. That service manual is exactly what I needed!

I am going to install it tomorrow. I have the service manual now and it doesn't look too easy! I've been building systems for 15 years+, and this looks complicated. Will report back...

haha

The best advice I can give you is to have a large working area (LARGE!). Follow the instructions step by step. If you don't understand what its telling you, stop, read it again, make a close visual inspection of the area. Don't be afraid to lift a couple of things up if theres like a screw or something you can't see, but don't use too much force.

When you're unscrewing things, make sure you break your work up in steps. At the beginning of each step, use a different section of your workspace to store screws. This way, you can reassemble it step by step, and if you have an extra screw from one step, you won't put the whole thing back together and realize there's an extra screw and be like 'WTF, where does this go?'

Bottom line, keep it simple, RTFM and above all else, KEEP IT ORGANIZED!!!

After you do it, you will feel a lot more comfortable about it. Taking a laptop apart isn't hard, it's just a lot of work.

Put the new AMD 64 3200 Mobile in my Presario M2105US yesterday, and it is working fine. It was a test of my patience getting it in, but I didn't break anything, and I had NO PARTS LEFTOVER! The laptop, which now has the AMD 64, 1 gig ram, and a 60gig 5400rpm HD really does fly along pretty well. I am very happy with it.

The most difficult thing to remove when taking the laptop apart was the keyboard and LED cover at the base of the screen. You had screws to take out from the bottom, and then it snaps out. I pried and pried, and was afraid I was going to break it. But I finally popped it loose. Everything else went pretty smooth.

The CPU fan does run a little more (Which was expected), but does cycle off and on. I have to install speedfan or MBM and check my temps.

What are safe temps for the AMD 64 mobile CPU's??

Thanks for everyones help,

Bob
