Obama appoints no new people to the court before the ruling.

PokerGuy: I'm not shocked at all that this happened.

lol.

There must be rationalization for these people, because in their minds they are never EVER wrong. They cannot admit that they were wrong. Instead they hope their ridiculousness is forgotten.

Whether or not you support the bill, the way the decision is worded is damnable: the right to property no longer exists in the United States. "However, five Justices agreed that the penalty that someone must pay if he refuses to buy insurance is a kind of tax that Congress can impose using its taxing power." Congress can now take your money if you choose not to spend it as they see fit. That's bad.

Ooh, are you going to start up the conservative version of "I'M MOVING TO CANADA"?

The big problem with this of course is that basically every developed nation on earth is far more liberal than the United States. You already live in one of the most conservative places on the planet and it's not good enough. Where will you go? Is Galt's Gulch accepting applications?

I never said I would move but if this keeps up then I will have no choice especially if barrack hussein obama wins in November.

SC said you can't mandate people buy health insurance, but you can tax people who don't. Therefore the whole bill is constitutional.

Basically it gives precedent to congress unlimited taxing authority. E.g. congress can levy a tax on people that don't eat enough broccoli, or drink too much soda.

Or not giving money to a political cause...

Y'all are all wrong. I have read the entire thread, so this might have already been corrected.

In 2014 its $95 per adult & $47.50 per child with a family cap of $285 or 1% of your income, which ever is greater
2015 is $325 per adult & $162.50 per child with a family cap of $975 or 2% of your income, which ever is greater
2016 on is $695 per adult or $347.50 per child with a family cap of 2085 or 2.5% of your income, which ever is greater

Have to be making $100,000k to pay a $2,500 fine, and that is only in 2016 and onward.

I'm a little confused by this post. Are these monthly totals or yearly totals? If it's monthly that is a pretty good penalty to make sure people get insurance. If that's yearly, then I see almost no point in even having a penalty. You take a standard household with two adults and two kids, making $40k a year gross (so they are not that well off at all). In 2016, the year of your highest %, that's $40k * .025 = $1000. So they'll have to go to the $2085 number.

$2085 penalty for a family of 4 for a year? $174 a month? And, I'm sure at some gross $ point, they will have credits/exemptions/etc to bring this down even more.

My point: This penalty is so low, why would anyone just not get insurance, and pay the penalty instead? I'm not seeing the stick here, just carrots...

They already tax income, consumption and property. How is this any different?

Anyone who thinks the ACA is an outrageous invasion of personal liberty and expansion of gov't power but doesn't oppose the War on Drugs is a hypocritical fool.

Why do you say this, other than the obvious that you believe it?

So when exactly was there a question of whether or not Congress had the power of taxation? I don't see a slippery slope at all.
There is none. Slippery slope is 99% of the time a pretext.

At this point, I suggest folks to take time to read the opinion(s). I started doing so myself. The opinion is linked in the first post of this thread.

Hyperbole much? Let's assume Souter and Stevens didn't retire. They would have also voted in favor for this bill. So that leaves the conservative John Roberts. Wait a minute, what's he doing on this side of the court!!!

I said not make worse. Obama hasn't had his shot at the SCOTUS yet.

It is a great day for America! We are one step closer to joining the rest of the civilized world in providing health coverage for everyone.

I concur. This first step may not be perfect but it is a step closer to better conditions for everyone. One can hope it will improve for the better.

I have not been watching news but I can't wait to see the chaos at Fox News and the party at MSNBC.

This will be disastrous for the US, the government has no right to get involved with this and is violating freedom.

Americans might have to move to other countries in order to get away from this mess

Please tell us where you would go then? I know, why don't you go to the libertarian enclaves of Hong Kong or Singapore. But wait! They also have universal healthcare! Taiwan? They do too. I think you're left with Somalia.
