Well my prediction was wrong (except for the 5-4 part) and I'm glad of it.

Headline article in today's paper was a prediction by our governor that striking down the law would cost citizens of CT $100M and negatively affect 500,000 policies.

I wonder how quickly the GOP will switch from calling it Obamacare to ACA? Basic principal of GOP politics is that you can never, ever give Obama credit for anything that goes right.

My new prediction (not a real tough one) the House GOP will make sure to censure the Atty General today in their political witchhunt in order to give them the best chance at controlling the headline stories tonight. The jury is still out as to whether they will continue to play chicken on the student loan and transportation bills, but I suspect they will cave (or at least punt) as staying in session would interfer with their vacation plans.

is this really terrible for Republicans?

now they get to run on a campaign of pretty cleanly accusing Democrats of raising taxes on all Americans.

So, there's goes Obama's campaign pledge not to raise taxes on those earning <$250,000...

/sarcasm

The penalty for not getting health insurance is, and always was, a tax-just like Romney did in MA. Unlike Romney's tax, this one is pretty small-$50 as I recall.

I think that has been settled.

Have I mentioned how boring the same stupid strawmen get after awhile?

I don't care that your opinion is stupid and wrong, but it does suck how boring you are getting.

Like almost all of his other major pledges, it was not unexpected that he would break this one too. What saddens me is that some people actually trusted him.

I believe the penalty is $2500.. is this going to be adjusted for inflation? In 20 years it will make much more sense to not pay and get insurance only when you're sick. And votes will never be there to raise it.

Time for Republicans to begin using the mandate power once they're back in office. Use this as a club to basically outlaw abortions with mandatory pre-procedure services (or maybe a surety bond), mandatory ID (without which voting is prohibited), mandatory retirement and healthcare savings accounts, mandatory firearm purchases, etc. Bleed the Democratic constituency dry with all the mandates.

Yep exactly. Republican's may not be able to outlaw abortion, but it seems pretty clear that can put a tax on it.

Secession.

You don't want to be dictated to, band together with fellow conservatives and leave the Union to its own tyranny.

As a Southerner, I can tell you that secession doesn't work out as well in practice as it does in theory. Besides, there is still a lot of poverty in the South. Once the ACA goes fully into effect and many people down here have access to medical care that they once had to forgo, there will be an increase in the standard of living amongst even the staunchest conservatives. Just look to what happened when Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid were enacted.

dank69: That's a tenative settlement. If we have learned anything from the repeated fiascos last summer over raising the borrowing limit, Bohner has little control over many of the GOP wackos in the House-there were several tenative deals there that were later scuttled. I hope you are right, but I'll wait for the official votes to be cast.

I hope they don't punt on transportation again-that does a lot of harm to hiring and state level planning-noone is going to commit on a highway project with 90 days funding, for example.

50 a month or 50 a year? I usually do not chime in with these threads I'm interested in the numbers.

Pre-existing condition coverage and coverage of all kids under 18 SHOULD be enacted.

You cannot realistically force insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing conditions without mandating that everyone buy insurance. Without the individual mandate people would wait until they got sick and then buy coverage.

There's nothing special about Obama in that regard. What saddens me is that people actually trust politicians.

Sadly, this is true. I just wish I thought Obama ever had the intent to honor his promises. With the Bush's and with Clinton, I thought they honestly wanted to honor their promises but were unable to do so. Whether this is because they actually did have that intent or were just that good of liars, I do not know.

The obamacare ruling today means nothing. It was simply to rule if it met requirements to be considered a tax (as it was illegal as a commerce). The legality of that tax is yet to be decided, and will be ruled in 2014. It is still very possible that it would be illegal as a tax (and a tax cannot be implemented until its ruled legal).

Just another overhyped ruling on the the subject matter. Obamacare is still at risk to be shot down at anytime as much now and in the future as it has been until it is deemed and ruled LEGAL.

In 20 years the ACA will be fait accompli and people will have gotten over the current hubub.

Penalty in 2014 for not getting insurance is $285 or 1% of income.

Jumps up to just under $1000 or 2% of income in 2015, and then I think about $2000 or 2.5% of income in 2016.

What a juvenile response.

No it's quite logical.

This is a war, and when the rules are established we will all play by them. Similar to the filibuster in the Senate. The Obamacare mandate will only be the first of its kind, you better believe Republicans will find a use for it.
