The back of my card faces up... how on earth is yours down?

Sorry, should have explained better. I have a newer Lian Li, where the mobo it upside down. So the top of the card, is on top (heatsink logo) and the bottom, is on the bottom.

Pic of it

fyi - i had bought some thermal tape to replace the supposedly crappy AC ones for the backside ram heatsinks. I say supposedly, because when i tried to take it out, it wouldn't budge. Seems they were intended to be heated up. I was a bit worried too, since my system is just your normal desktop so is positioned horizontally.

Hope this helps in anyway.

I got mine from frozencpu.com Its where I shop first for cooling, PC mod type stuff.

I cant imagine that AC thinks the plate will stay on by itself. It wont. Perhaps in an AGP based system, where the back plate would be facing up, and gravity would keep it there. But on a PCI-E system, its on the bottom, and simply will not stay on.

You just got bad thermal tapes that's all.

Hmmm... that could potentially be a problem. I don't necessarily want this mod to be permanent. The NV5 Rev.1 could be easily removed without tape and stuff like that. I'm going to see if I can find some plastic brackets like on the Asus model. I prefer to use thermal grease instead of tape anyway.

There is no way the tape will hold, until it heats up. As I stated earlier, the backside memory plate, is pointing to the bottom of the case, so gravity pulls it off. I suppose I could clamp it on there.. till it heats up. I would rather they just add barbs like the Asus model has, as that would be MUCH better.

I wonder if those would work to secure the spreader..?

That actually got me thinking. I installed a Thermalright fan in my wife's pc, and I had to remove the stock intel heatsink cage thing. It had pushpins like that on it, I wonder if I could use those. I might have to check into that if I can find those. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

I have the same style case. Plus, I don't really want to glue the spreader to the RAM. A mod like this shouldn't be "permanent" IMO.

Ill try those. I have a lot of those from previous Lian Li cases.

Dude, you dont need anything to secure the spreader on teh back of the card, he just has a wierd Lian-Li case

It will NOT hold, by just the thermal tape that was included.

Its not a wierd case.. its a great case.

ackmed, how big is that case :Q damn. looks nice though.

i have the silencer coming friday i think. i'll be kinda peeved if it has the same wire issue. its not like i won't switch it but wtf is with them shipping like that?

thanks for the info guys!

so whats the deal here?

mine just came in but it says rev2 on the original packaging but it has a red sticker up the top right saying-

"(rev 3) now also compatible to 7800 series"

so what, the rev2 and the rev3 are the same except the red sticker 😕

it came from svc.com

No... I think the main difference between the Rev.2 and Rev. 3 are the heatspreader for the RAM on the back of the card. None of the 6-series had RAM there, so the spreader wasn't needed.

hmm, well without opening the package it looks like theres a plate for the ram but it seems awfully thin. is that supposed to cool the rams?

thanks for the quick response btw.

edit- just checked that review. i guess they do expect that to cool the rams. oh well, deal with this later.

I had the wire problem too, was a bitch to fix, stupid company.

Also the memory sinks suck IMO

Good change though

btw, did you guys use the TIM pad that came with it or as5?

I scrapped it, and used AS3. It is AS thats already on it, but I wanted to apply it myself..

They've sent me an email back, and offered to replace mine free of charge. I told them it was ok, but now we are discussing the back plate problem.

that back plate is a joke. i have some left over ram sinks from vf700's so i'll use those.
