Shall we ban sales of alcohol because people drink and drive?

I understand the concern, but this seems like an overwhelmingly broad reaction.

That's silly - they will have systems in the future that will prevent an impaired person from activating the ignition though.

They already exist, but it's unfair and unrealistic to burden the law-abiding populace with an expensive complication in order to drive.

How is this different from the legality of blocking cell phones in say a theater? There was some flap about blocking emergency signals or whatnot...

They could do this immediately if they wanted - gps shows movement more than 10 mph no SMS.

Of course the crybabies in the pax seat or people on buses, trains would complain. Public transit vehicles OTOH could be equipped with devices that allow bypass of this. (for everyone except the driver of course!)

On days that I work, I currently spend about 3 hours total on trains/subways. That would be annoying to not be able to utilize my droid X2 to read news, text, or do whatever.

Soon that commute will be cut to 20 minutes though :awe:

I wonder how this affects texting while boating. Which begs the question - Ruby - do major cell carriers put towers on cruise ships?

I only text while driving. Never at signs or lights. Nope.
I never see anyone else on the road ever either. They created these roads just for me, and me alone. Because I have my own minions & I'm that importantly awesome.
Invincible too.

Haha boating not even going there...but yes there is a tower that lets people have access when the ship is not near a cell tower ashore. Roaming charges apply and can be as expensive as five dollars a minute depending on your carrier.

Cool, but what if you're the passenger?

That's what angry birds is for. 😛

You can't ban stupid, you just have to let evolution do its thing.

I never understood the specific laws against texting while driving. There were already laws in place that handled inattentive driving AFAIK.

sounds stupid and expensive, also everybody shuts down bluetooth to spare the battery.

Why not just enforce it violently with roadblock traps?

when im driving for work and an emergency call comes in, ill pull over and call them right back. if i dont know i have an emergency brewing for work until i get out of the truck, it could be costly and/ or dangerous for people. i am hands free anyway, and dont text unless im stopped.

problem is, some people cant control their need to be connected. i shouldnt have to pay a price for other peoples lack of control.

It is just the latest craze in inattentive driving.
At one time it was ladies putting on makeup.
In the 90's little TVs and DVD players came along, then it was drivers watching TV. Wife worked at a Honda dealer back then, had one customer who got in three wrecks that way.
Laptops? I've seen that too.

hell, ive seen people reading books, filing paperwork and one guy even playing a guitar on the freeway. while driving. one lady looked like she was finishing up her home mortgage paperwork in between stop and go traffic, i finally honked and yelled at her to work at the office, not in front of me. she flipped me off and continued to slow the rest of the world behind her down.
