It's not that they don't serve a purpose, it's that the majority of the people that own these things don't need them. I think that is where the rub comes in. Beyond that there are these things called "vans" that have been around for years. Many people who buy vehicles like this and cart their kids and groceries around would be better served by a minivan or van, but they just aren't "cool" like SUVs.

Who are you to decide what we need? I don't need lots of things. In fact i could find a nice warn southern california beachside community and live quite confortably in a box driving a bicycle. But I don't. Niether do you.

Fact: We own an avalanche, used to own a tahoe.
Fact: The hitch is NEVER on it unless in use.
Fact: Drive past my house you wont see a boat, nor a trailer.
Fact: We own a 20' trailer, and a 12' trailer.
Fact: 20' trailer is parked in the back of our house hidden from street view.
Fact: 12' trailer is at my uncles.
Fact: We carry around 5 fourwheelers on it at a time.
Fact: My dad uses the truck for work, which involves a single individual man driving around with some days getting 300 miles on it.
Fact: Its used this was 90% of the time.
Fact: This is how a lot of people use them.

Good luck with that. Try loading 1000lbs worth of tools in a Caravan and see if you can get over the grapevine without killing the transmission. Not gonna happen.

i used to hate suvs becasue i'd say they wasted a lot of gas, and made it hard to drive, since they blinded me, and ruined visibility.

i'm taking back the gas thing, because well i drive a car now that wastes tons of gas. and well my parents both have suvs. i guess there are 2 types of suvs. m y moms bmw x3 is like a totally un suv like waste. but my dad's acura mdx, seems great. its very very spacious and i can really see why you'd need all that space.

The Mileage SUV?s get isn?t a issue with me, because I wear my lead foot often.

It?s the Mentality that some of the drivers exhibit on the streets.

I?m bigger than you so watch out, Or its snowing I got my 4x4 going I can't be stoped.

They are right. In snow the SUV can't be stopped 😉

Waaaaaah, somebody call the waaaaaaaaahhhmmbulance.

Jesus Christ people, if someone wants to buy a HUGE SUV, let them. It doesn't bother me a single bit. And for those who are so gung-ho against SUV's, take a look at how pathetic it is to tell another person what to drive and how they must use their car.

My issue with SUVs isn't the gas mileage. In fact, the gas mileage on my own vehicle is subpar, and I'll readily admit it.

For those who have a legitimate use for them (offroading, lots of snow to deal with, towing, heavy cargo hauling, etc) I have no issues with that either. I've even considered getting one myself as a secondary vehicle if I purchase a boat like I plan to in the near future.

The thing that pisses me off about them is that many $hitty drivers buy them to compensate for their own lack of skills. If they suck @ driving and plow into some poor sap who happens to be driving a ~2500 lb Miata, the scratch on the 4500 lb SUV will buff right out, yet they will be pulling parts of the Miata driver out of the grille of the truck for a week. Sucks for people who dislike driving pickups/SUVs because driving a regular car has gotten to the point where it's almost a safety hazard due to the multitudes of unnecessary behemoths everywhere you look - with many of those behind the wheel unfit to drive a golf cart. Not to mention the supermen who go 90+mph through 4" of snow or sleet with the "4WD = invincibility" attitude.

And MANY people who do buy them, do not need them. Case in point, my parents' next door neighbors have 3 Chevy Blazers - black, red, and white. One for the mother, and one for each of the two daughters. They own NO trailers and never tow anything, the only time they haul cargo in it is when they carry their suitcases to the airport once a year, and I've never seen more than 2 people (driver included) in any of them at one time. They bought them because those two girls can't drive for $hit. Whoever they hit is almost guaranteed to get the worst of it. Hell, one of the girls wrecked just last year.

The neighbor on the other side has a Pathfinder. She's cool, but has absolutely no use for that truck. She just bought it to be "trendy". Just like almost everyone else on that street.

I have no real issues with the vehicles themselves, if they are needed/necessary.

IMO I don't see the problem with picking a larger vehicle for the saftey aspect of it. Just one of the features that come with owning a larger vehicle. I own 2 vehicle a 2004 ford F350 diesel and a 2001 ford mustang GT. I admit I use my truck more as a daily driver than I do my mustang and one of those reasons is the safety aspect, along with a few others.

No need to blame the diver of the bigger vehicle for auto deaths. It's common since that the bigger one is gonna win and when people make the decision of what they are gonna buy they should take that into consideration. Nobody forced them to buy a small lightweight car. Heck I don't even do much towing, most of the stuff I haul will fit into the bed and an f350 can carry a lot. I do have an extra large trailer hitch on the back though. Been rearended once already in it and the jeep cherokee that hit me didn't even make it to the bumper. never gonna see me take that hitch off. It may not be the best thing saftey wise for the other drivers on the road, but it suits me just fine.

They are safe no doubt about it (until they hit another of equal/greater mass or stature). I won't drive a vechile less than 6000 lbs. I feel very unsafe. I was almost killed on a motorcycle by a wreckless driver who pulled right in front of me when i was 19. Broke just about every bone in my legs, lost half the skin on my body and still have nightmares 14 years later. I get in small cars and feel very vulnerable. Now that I have children even more so. It's my duty to provide a safe enviroment for them. If that means everyone gets SUV's I'll buy a big rig peterbuilt and get a king ranch conversion.

I honestly doubt Ford is cowing to environmentalists or safety lobby groups, it boils down to the vehicle not making respectable sales figures. That is understandable really, if I were in the market for such a frivelous vehicle, there are plenty of superior options in the same price class. But flame on, regardless.

I know what you mean. A few years ago I got my pilots liscense and bought a small Cessna from my father in law. It's a great tiny plane and easy on fuel!🙂

Sure would be nice if they'd get all those fuel guzzling huge jets out of the sky so I'd have more freedom and wouldn't be worried about them besides the fact they simply drink up the fuel!😉

When we get the 10 feet of snow the old timers say we're going to get very soon, I sure will be happy not being stuck, b/c I have a big, 4WD SUV with low-range-selectable gearing and a limited-slip rear differential to carry me on my merry way. The 33" All-Terrain tires on there that are taller than a Miata will certainly help.

Sure I get 12MPG on a good day, but come snow day, I'lll be charging $20 apiece to pull Prius, Insight and Miata owners out of the snow. 😀

It's the right thing to do to stop and help people. I do it all the time and expect nothing in return...usually.

It depends on the situation. If it's elderly people I won't let them give me anything even if they try. If it's a hottie, I'll offer to buy her a cup of coffee after I pull her out. 😀

Hehe it's usually the yuppie punks driving thier subaru wrx's or VW torges thinking they can go over snow banks that diss me. I use a chain and most say nevermind when they see it other times I pull them and it's like "thanks a lot c ya".

Personally I think it's pretty damn sefish when I constantly get bombarded with requests to borrow my truck because their vehicle can't do what they need it to do. Don't be so selfish with your money and buy a more capable vehicle isntead of borrowing friends capable vehicles.

Yep, goes both ways buddy.

Also, why are you calling me selfish? I don't own an SUV, but what gives me the right to tell someone else that they can't own one?

OK, how is telling people what they can and can't do not pathetic also?

I mean come on, you are aware that the airlines, heating/cooling/lighting our homes, and even the railroads are larger consumers of fossil fuels than domesticly used vehicles in the U.S right? The funny thing about it is, all but perhaps the largest user, the airlines has had alternative options available and researched and found to be feasable but still, fossil fuels are the number one supplier in each.

Why not focus efforts in those areas since they are the largest consumers and then the vehicular use will fall into place!

couches, refigerators all sorts of crap I've had to haul that's not mine.

YOU'RE SELFISH!!!

You're damn right I think of myself. No one else will, nor should they.

Tell you what, you think of yourself and I'll think of myself and we'll both be happy, OK?
