i think my disk space is something like 300 gb in total - a 240gb SSD and a 60Gb SSD for system.

a quarter of that is system files
a quarter is porn
60Gb for Quake Champions
no i cannot get rid of the porn

By my maths you should have 90GB left over for pron

LOLz..

This is why i have 4 x 2TB SSD's just for my gaming library.
I have 4TB dedicated just to steam
2TB dedicated to EA Origin + Ubisoft Play
2TB dedicated to Epic + Bnet + (whatever else i need)

And im seriously thinking about forking over 1300 and grabbing an Intel P4510 8TB.
One of these guys:

Games are getting ridiculous and you can only have so much space on a SSD, until you want to break your wallet and go enterprise.

Bah porn doesn't require itself to be on SSD.
Get a NAS for that, and have it on storage across the network, to make it more accessible for you.

Also it makes it a lot easier for your friend or family to dispose of said NAS if you happen to run into a unfortunate event, and don't want to embarass.

The games are getting larger. Also, I seem to be getting crashes to desktop in COD MW on groundwar. Happened twice last 2 hours. Possible game issue or is my 1080 Ti wearing out?

My STEAM library is 407 gigabytes. We have slow ass DLS here in the sticks. If I wanted to download the new CoD I would start today and hope it's done after work tomorrow.

I think cutscenes and uncompressed textures are the main reason for the huge game sizes these days, but most games don't really look any better than the ones from 4-5 years ago, which were more like 10-30GB. I tend to just remove a lot of them once I finish them, especially singleplayer games with checkpoint-only saves. I have a lot of permanently installed games but they are mostly pre-2012 or so, when they weren't quite as big.

Just wondering why some people have so many games installed. Do you play different games that frequently?
Is it saves you don’t want to lose?
Is it bandwidth?
No wrong answers I’m just wondering.

1. Sometimes yes. Steam makes it rather easy these days to swap games between install directories and drives. Most of my Steam games are on a hard drive as they either don't need ssd speeds or I don't play them enough to warrant it. HDD space is cheap, though for games I use 4-6TB 7200rpm drives.
2. Not really. Most of those saves are cloud these days or manually backed up by me anyway.
3. Yes. Speed and caps.

Even at 150 Mbits down, its only really gotten annoying for me in the last year or so with larger install requirements and games like WoW, Destiny2, and GTA5 growing in size. Hell, Blizzard can't seem to keep Overwatch and Heroes installs from doubling every few months due to patches which means I have to redownload and reinstall to save 15GB or so of ssd space.

The main problem now is simply bandwidth caps. I get 1TB a month. I can exceed that within a few days with 150Mbit let alone if I upgrade to 275-500 or 1GB. It makes far more sense for me to archive/backup games and not re download them if they're over 30GB downloads. Thankfully some devs still have decent file compression on installers so an 15gb installer expands to 30-50GB. I also have over 650GB of drm free game installers from GOG, most backed up in 3 different places.

PS Store your media files and pron on hard drives. Such a waste of SSD space.

Even Starcraft 2 is 26GB. Not sure how they managed to bloat that out so much. Cut scenes I guess.

Friend of mine wanted to try out Black Ops 4 so i went to install it for her. Found out the game went from like 93gb when i last played it to 164gb. We both couldn't believe it. It's the base game so i don't know if the game is installing other dlc but not unlocking or what. I lost interest in the game to long ago to even care anymore but that size wow.

Nope... Typical Activision coding.
Activision has finally surpassed EA in the worst Gaming company ever.

You'd be amazed at how cheap i am with other things besides my PC.
Did i mention the desk i use to game on doesnt even cost 1/10th the value of the monitors which are clamped to it?

I just change my playing and buying habits. I've been without a home internet connection since 2015 and use my cellphone hotspot to patch my Xboxes....or I take them to a family member's house and plug them in for an hour. I've got 2.

Basically, I buy games when they're in the $10 price range and play them to completion...then sell them or give them away. I play Madden a lot, but am currently on the 2016 version. If I was serious about gaming, I would have the internet and spend more on newer titles and something more than a 500GB Xbox. Eventually, I'm going to invest more in technology for my kids (still young), but am enjoying being cheap while I pay off my house. Not having cable or internet is saving me about $180-200 a month.

I'm about to jump back into PC gaming soon and will be getting Flight Sim 2020...building a rig for it. I plan on going with a 6+ TB mirrored drive system for storage and SSD for OS operations.

I turned updating off for CoD. I just need to get through the single player before I delete it off my SSD. The thing is that a download like that takes 16 hours on my crappy DSL since I live in the country and that's all I get. Crazy.

wtf. are they just flooding the game with uncompressed 4k texture packs? that seems absurdly large.

Maybe this relates to the shrinking that they're talking about, but the Modern Warfare directory is still only ~150GB on my machine. Now, I still think that is waaaaaaaaaaay too large for a simple shooter. I mean... World of WarCraft is only close to half the size at 70GB.

It makes me wonder that if they are using things like uncompressed textures that if they're doing it for the consoles? My understanding is that texture decompression would be done on the CPU, and the current console generation is using rather anemic Jaguar cores. Is it plausible that removing decompression is there to reduce CPU strain?

I’m going to guess it has to do with big companies focusing on profit vs good work.
I’m confident there is some finance guy wringing our maximum revenue and that has to do with limiting staffing and projects. Now that people are talking about it I predict the install size will shrink

To date I've never seen evidence of any game using 4K textures. This looks like a combination of pre-rendered cut scenes along with uncompressed audio. Also apparently many console games replicate their assets for different quality levels, so there's a ton of data duplication.

I know Final Fantasy XV has the optional 4K texture pack for PC, which raises the required install space from 100GB to 155GB.

My current install of ARK: Survival Evolved is like 145GB, and I have like only 3 of the 8(?) maps installed. Throw in some big mods and/or total conversions and you could easily get over 200GB for the one game.

The Steam blurb: https://store.steampowered.com/app/771560/FFXV_WINDOWS_EDITION_4K_Resolution_Pack/

If you look carefully, nowhere do they explicitly state the textures are 4096x4096. When they say "4K", they're referring to the game resolution. Every other official "4K" texture pack employs similar obfuscation.

Again, I've never seen a game that explicitly states the textures are true 4K assets, so I don't believe such a game exists.

Hm, it sounds like the issue is in the interpretation of "4K textures". I think Square-Enix and other companies mean it as "textures to support the visual fidelity of 4K resolution" where you mean it as ~4000x~4000 texture size. I'd suspect that your definition is likely the more accurate one; however, given the bastardization of terms like 2K, it's not much of a surprise that people just kind of use terms however they want.

Speaking of the bastardization of 2K, I still find it a bit annoying that websites like Newegg place 2560x1440 resolution under the 2K category. 2K is specifically defined as 2048x1080 just like 4K is 4096x2160. I can live with 1920x1080 (FHD) being considered 2K as the 2K format is meant to be an intermediary with FHD anyway.
