Abortion

Most of these things come up after reading the advice columns in my newspaper each morning.

Today there was a young girl (22) who left her boyfriend of 2 years because she cheated on him (he doesn't know this though). She finds out that she is pregnant from the guy that she cheated with. The advice columnist helps her with her different options regarding going back to her old boyfriend, confronting the guy she cheated with, and staying with her father. Then she adds in "if you decide to keep the child..."...

The way I look at abortion is that it should not just be used as a form of birth control. I think that a person should be free to abort a child if it is conceived by means of rape, if there is sufficient evidence that the child will be born with severe illness/defects, or if the pregnancy will pose harm to the mother.

I don't believe that women should be allowed to abort a child on the grounds that they used bad judgement and made a mistake.

What do you guys think of my opinion?

I am against flame wars. I am pro-life...but ironically I am on ATOT (which probably means I don't have a life).

Pro-life. Bad decisions can turn out for the better. Even if raising a child by yourself will be hard, at least give it a chance and raise it with the morals and values that you wish you had when you got pregnant.

I think that you're yet another person who wants to pass laws to force people to do what you want because you don't like it that you don't get a vote in how they live their own lives.

Yeah, I think abortion is on par with suicide - it's a cowardly way out of a situation in which you have made bad decisions.

The argument that abortion is a method of keeping urban populations from booming too much is invalid, as they are expensive, too.

Also, the logic that babies with defects could be aborted, while "normal" babies are kept full-term is a horrible thought. Between life with complications, and death, I think I would choose life regardless. Besides, what's a "normal" baby? What if the baby has asthma? Or if it will be paralyzed? Or have muscular dystrophy? There are plenty of people who lead fulfilling lives who have those afflictions. Life shouldn't be something we grant because it's convenient of us. It's not our place to say whether or not a human being can live, arbitrarily.

Good point. You're getting your panties all in a bunch and the text you quoted could easily mean "not give up for adoption."

I don't believe a child should have to live with their parents mistake.

And she did.

I think there should be a limit as to what consequences should be avoidable for those consequences. If I chose to steal something I shouldn't be able to kill the witnesses just to remove the consequences either.

That being said, a lot of those babies are probably better off aborted than living w/ some dumb-arse mother that doesn't want them.

Someone once told me that if I'm pro-life I also have to be for unwed mothers, thus, I support helping them out.

Rape is a touchy issue - the choice of having a child wasn't the woman's. However, it's still a legitimate human being. I tend to lean towards adoption in this scenario.

As for danger to the mother's life, well, that's a hard choice. However, if there was a burning building, and you had to choose only one person to rescue - a child, or an adult, you would doubtless choose the child, would you not?

Stefan, I competely agree with you. I feel she should have the child and give it to you if it's unwanted.

I think OREOSpeedwagon is pro-death.

lol :p I just think that if the mother (or father, if he doesn't ditch them) don't have time to take care of the kid (i.e. if they're in college and working full time too, only home a few hours of the day) than it's probably better to get an abortion. if the kid is not going to get raised right, it'd be worse for the kid....

And you have to own up to them - you can't just say "I made a mistake, and I'm going to pay money to a doctor to hide it for me".

But should a child die because of their parent's mistake?
