Abit AV8 Strange Restart Issue

I just got an Abit A8V, a 90nm A64 3000+ and 1 gb Mushkin Basic memory (2X512). I also got a thermalright XP-90 to keep it cool.

Installation went great and the first time I started up, it started with no issues except that I had to change the threshhold on the warning beeps for slow spinning CPU fans - no big deal.

In both BIOS and Motherboard Monitor, I have not broken 40C, so everything is staying nice and cool.

Here is the wierd thing. If I do a warm boot (restart) it has no issues. However, if I do a cold boot (shut down) and then immediately try to restart, it tries to boot up and then shuts off/restarts and then tries again and shuts off/restarts and tries again and shuts off/restarts, etc. It does not follow any pattern of how long it runs before it restarts - anywhere from 1 sec to 6 sec. The only way to break this cycle is to kill the power from the power supply.

If I immediately turn the power supply back on and try to start the computer, I get the same issue. However, if I leave it off for 10 min or so, the computer will start up no problems.

I can only think of two possibilities (since its not heat). Either I have some sort of static buildup (is this possible?) or I have a short somewhere.

Anyone have any ideas of where I should look or what to do about this?

Try a different Power Supply. If you have an old Antec PS then that is the problem. I used to have an Antec 430 and it would do the same. I used a cheap generic 400w and it solved the problem. The Antec was perfect and it had ran several MSI Neo Platinum and Chaintech boards before with no problems until I used the Abit. I am just waiting for my new PS to get this baby running again.

Thanks for the idea. I have an Antec 380True that I just bought that came with the Antec Sonata. It should be pretty new...

Anyway, under normal usage I probably wouldn't even notice since I rarely shut all the way down and then immediatly restart, but I would like to fix it.

Also, due to the fact that I just purchased all these other parts, I don't exactly have a bunch of money to buy extra PSUs.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I will try another PSU if i get a chance. Anyone else have any other possibilities?

You know - I think I'm about done with Antec if this is the issue. I got the Sonata with the 380W PS because my 430W PS died. Antec is supposed to be quality, but that hasn't been my experience with their PSUs recently. I do like the Sonata though...

Grr....frustrated...

if you contact them they will send you a new one that does not have the problem with the Abit board :) They are still petty good quality though and it is only with the Abit AV8 :)

Do you know if all new Antec PS fix this issue? I am actually in the process of sending back the 430W Truepower that died previous to me getting the Sonata case. When they send me a replacement 430W should it work okay? That way I could wait until I get the 430W back and then send in the 380W.

Seem reasonable?

And I did want to try OCing this. I've never OCd before (couldn't afford to risk it) but I've heard its pretty easy to get modest overclocks without any danger on the 90nm chips.

Suposedly all the new Antec PS are ok with the this board. I am pretty sure that the one you get will be ok. I sold my Antec before nowing that they could have replaced it with one that would work with the Abit board :( I needed an exuse to get a new ps anyways :) so I went ahead and got an Enermax 550 :) waiting on this baby to get here so I can oc the $hit out of my 3000 winchester. Withe the antec I was able to go all the way to 285 but it would shut down after a while (the ps fault I am pretty sure). Yes it is pretty easy to get 2.4 out if the winchesters for what I have read just need a well ventilated case and good hs for it :)
