ok, I am using Word 2002 (officeXP) and I just had an issue. I was writing a report when I did the ctrl-a to change the headings. All the text was highlited a dull grey color (not the normal highlighted color) then that I could not get rid of by clicking anywhere. I decided to save my doc and then exit the program. I reopened my doc and there was not text in it at all!!! I thought I would have to rewrite it all but I noticed that the file size of the saved doc is still 210 KB, the same size it was when it had text in it. A new, blank word doc size is about 20 KB. Does this mean my text is still in there somewhere and I can still recover it? if so, how? thanks

P.S. I all-ready posted this in the software forum, but there are more people here so I wanted to see if you guys knew anything about this. thanks

Don't know, but you could

Open it in word pad...

Copy all text or save it as txt file.

Then open new Wordfile...paste text.
Or open new txt file in Word

I don't know what went wrong, but I do know that the reason the "blank" file was 210kb is because Word keeps track of all the changes you make to a document. So all your text was saved, then you deleted it somehow, the file is still gooing to have all the text you typed in in the file.

This has caused a problem in large buisnesses a few times, since information that was not supposed to be there (or sensitive info) that was deleted has been recovered and used against the company. One security measure that is recomended if you have important info is to highlight everything in the finished document and copy and paste it to a new document. Otherwise someone can open up the document in wordpad and see every piece of info and what was done with it.

thanks grandcow, I will remember that. I am kinda glad for that as it saved my butt another 2 hours. 2 hours is not long, I know, but when you hated every min of it... well, it is nice not to have to repeat that.

That is very interesting. A friend of mine had the text of a document disappear on her a few weeks ago and I had no idea how to recover it. Now I know how to help her get all of her work back. Thanks for the info ThaGrandCow.

I believe the feature we are talking about is called fast saves, and, I think you can turn it off in one of the options dialog boxes. Then it will save the entire contents of the file and not just the changes that have been made
