i'm thinking about upgrading to 64 bit, but i'm not sure which direction to go. i'm comfortable with overclocking and i've done it on a few systems of mine, though i'm not sure how far exactly these a64 cores will go. should i just buy a refurbed 3400+ or just buy a 3000 or 3200+ and overclock it?

I would consider waiting for the 939 chips to come out. I currently have a 3000+ 64 and the difference between that and my barton is not much.

For right now he's right. But I'd have to agree with seeing what happens with the 939 chips and boards. That dual channel seems worth waiting a few months (hopefully) for.

sure... but compare an overclocked a64 vs barton. i'm pretty sure that my 2.6 ghz a64 can beat the crap out of a 2.6 ghz barton or even a 2.7 ghz barton.

i say go for the 754 socket a64... they have a roadmap planned for at least the a64 3700+ and i think they'll possibly due more of course depending on the demand for these chips...

They are moving the A64 over to the 939 chipset once it comes out, so 754 A64s are gonna stop being produced before the end of this year. I'd probably wait for the 939 boards...especially for when nvidia releases the NF3 250 for the 939 chipset :). The 939 will have better memory support (like dual channel) and will have more options for A64's in the future (like the A64 4200+ and beyond, compared to 754's 64bit future ending with the 3700+). Once the 939 boards are out, there will become support for 32bit cpus on the 754s, so I imagine the 754 will become the new nForce 2 and the 939 will become the new 754 in a way...so we get the better of both the 32bit (mmm, integrated memory controller for 32bit systems :D ) and 64bit (mmm, dual channel for 64bit systems :D ) worlds.

Yeah but that is you on Prometeia. Anyway even 2.4 GHz Athlon 64 is better than 2.6 GHz Barton. So Athlon 64 is the way to go unless you are limited with budget constraints.

Im sure the 939 will have a better price too...(sarcastic)

I can confirm that, having had a Barton@2.43ghz 422DDR DC synch and now having a 3000+@2.4ghz 400DDR and run benchies on both. The A64@2.4ghz even@6:5 is faster at everything including SETI, Pifast, SuperPi, Sciencemark, POVRAY, DVDShrink video compression, and literally leaves the Barton behind for gaming. If I were running 1:1 the gap would widen further. If the difference in buying A64 over Barton doesn't leave you eating Ramen noodles every day I say A64 is the way to go. Waiting for skt939 is prudent at this juncture, there's a thousand points of light, got to stay the course :D

They're halving the cache and will produce way more of them than with the 754 A64s, so I wouldn't be suprised if your sarcasm turned to truth a few months after release...

And why would we want half the cache?

good question but that's what the roadmap shows is that the a64's are gonna have 512 cache or some of the later ones... i don't remmeber where the roadmap was.. probably on AT's homepage.

As for the issue of the nforce3 250 chipset... they are releasing it for the socket 754 a64's as well...

They're halving the cache because the FX line is going to be the "performance" line, and it would be easier for them to justify the extra cost for an FX if they keep it at 1mb l2 cache while putting the A64s to 512kb cache. As it is right now, the 3400+ with 1mb cache is way to close (in performance) to the FX with 1mb cache to justify the massive price difference, and AMD realizes this. I guess it comes down to this...AMD is trying to establish a more solid pricing to performance system while trying to bring the A64 in as their new mainstreme chip by the end of the year. In the process the bartons and xps will become the budget chips I guess, taking place of the durons maybe?
