Civil liberties lawyers have appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to allow a Wiccan priestess to offer prayers before a public board's meetings.

ACLU backs Wiccan suit

God Bless (The ACLU i mean).
More mainstream, everyday..
now they are FOR prayer in public places (as long as your a wiccan)

Hey, if they are going to allow someone to talk about Jesus before a board meetings, they can let her talk about her particular religion.

"as long as your [sic] a wiccan"? Maybe I missed the ACLU dumping on other religious people trying to get equal access to pray...but this is a case where they are already allowed to do so, just the wiccans are discriminated against. I don't see the problem here.

What's wrong with that? This is America We welcome all colors all religions. These people in Richmond are obviously exclusionary anti-american and haters. This "smoke and mirrors appeal" will be struck in SC.

BTW-- where's the ACLJ on this case? Should they be defending the religious rights of this priestess too?

It sounds like they already allow other religious figures in the community to give a "religious invocation" as the article says. This is simply equal access. Either everyone can do it, or nobody can do it. Sounds right to me.

The Anti Christian Legal Unit is now pro-religion? Maybe now they can stop lobbying to force gays into churches.

You're so ignorant it's not funny. ACLU defends chirstian pastors all the time. And why should they stop trying for equal access? Should blacks still be excluded from Augustus National and the Rotary Club?

Problem with guys like you is you believe in politics of exclusion and hate vs. equality and cooperation so you'll never understand an organization like the ACLU. I'm preparing another check.

November 9, 2004: ACLU of Nevada defends a Mormon student who was suspended after wearing a T-shirt with a religious message to school.

December 22, 2004: ACLU of New Jersey successfully defends right of religious expression by Christian jurors.

November 20, 2004: ACLU of Nevada supports free speech rights of evangelists to preach on the sidewalks of the strip in Las Vegas

July 10, 2004: Indiana Civil Liberties Union defends the rights of a Baptist minister to preach his message on public streets.

March 25, 2004: ACLU of Washington defends an Evangelical minister's right to preach on sidewalks.

October 28, 2002: ACLU of Pennsylvania files discrimination lawsuit over denial of zoning permit for African American Baptist church.

July 11, 2002: ACLU supports right of Iowa students to distribute Christian literature at school.

And on and on and on ad nausuam

PS that's not to say I agree with them on everything (second amendment stance, abortion advocacy, NAMBLA) but 99% of the time they are all we got when the ugliness of government and society rears it's anti-consititutional head like a ton of bricks on top of the individual or small group.

This place was starting to settle down somewhat, too, what with Rip gone. Now this troll comes back?

I'm wondering if there's some unspoken "contest" between them to see who can get banned first (by the "liberal activist mods").

It is real simple. IGNORE his posts. People like him and Lord Zendari crave the attention they did not get in school. Don't give it to them.

Hahaha. You know HS, your trolling is at an all time low. You know how you like to get down on everyone else for their reading comprehension and education level? Maybe you should look in the mirror. It clearly states that they already allow judeo-christian messages before the meetings. This is about equal opportunity.

Pathetic try, now get back under the bridge.

And now Heartsurgeon's little tour of "liberal stuff I hate" is now complete. He's managed to slam over the course of the past two days: The ACLU, PETA, and The U.N., while simulatenously defending Bush on his tax cuts, DeLay on his ethics scandals, and all things Republican. He's not partisan, he's right. Oh brother, move over Rush you have some competition.

Gotta love it, if it is "mainstream" religion, Liberals want it banned from the public square.

If it's wacky enough (Satanism, Wiccan) call out the lawyers and defend it..

How about the one where they sacrifice chickens...what's that called...Santeria...yep, lets get some animal sacrifice going to "bless" the public board meeting.

oops, we're back to PETA again, they may not like the Santerian's "use" of chicken.....

Amazing how your own proclivities come around to bite you in the a$$.

Bet Heartsurgeon would have no problem with the Lord's Prayer before a meeting but this prayer sends him/her in to orbit:D:beer:

Wicca does not involve sacrificing of animals, nor Satanism. It is a nature religion that respects animals.

It's a far less sinister religion than the big ones. People kill others by the dozens, hundreds, even thousands for the "mainstream" religions. I can't think of anyone who's been killed recently for Wicca.

ACLU has a history of sticking up for the underdog who do not have a massive contingent of lawyers already on their side. Mainstream religions have their own organizations to protect them.

You should stop making ridiculous comparisons, and get your facts straight bud.

Sorry if my characterization of Wiccian's as "wacky" perturbed you. It's my opinion....

I have my facts entirely correct. Santerian's use animal sacifice as an integral part of their "religion".

Gotta love it, the wiccan's are getting lots of love and support on this forum.

That's not the point, as you well know. The Establishment Clause prohibits government from favoring a particular faith over others. If the Chesterfied Board of Supervisors allows Judeo-Christian invocations before its meetings, it can't discriminate against other faiths, regardless of whether they are "mainstream."
