is there such a phone that is 100% white even when the phone's display is off?

for phones, tv, anything with a color display, why is it black when power is cut off? can it ever be any other color?

IIRC, black is the actual color of the display. So if you want to save on battery, have a black background.

With OLED at least, you have to have a black background.
With TFT you gave two layers of polarizing material, which are usually orthogonal to one another, not letting any light from the background through - except if it's the other way around.

Either way, you want a black background, because the aim is to contrast the backlit pixels against the blackness of the inactive pixels. A white background would be irritating.

Only e-ink can get a result that it close to what you want, as it's reflective based, and can be whited-out before switching off. Except, usually the e-ink white isn't that white either. But the technology would make it possible.
It sucks for interactive displays, though, because of the extremely slow update cycle.

Pixels are Red, Blue, Green, or black when turned off. When the screen is turned off and not using any battery that is why it is black.

here is a photoshopped example of what i mean.
the TV screen is white even though it is off.

with all the rumors of apple making a TV... im thinking this might be what they are coming out seeing how they are so obsessed with white and aluminum.

Looks OK, but something would need to be done with the rug and the stand.

It's not possible, there is no current technology out there that would allow for this easily while still offering equal resolution, contrast ratios, colour gamut, etc.

Don't expect anything like that for awhile if ever, there is just no functional reason to do it, it would only be aesthetically pleasing and even then I personally think it looks ugly.

We don't need an example of what you mean. We know what you mean. We are telling you that it is not possible with current technology (regardless of the fact that it would be ugly). Even the white iphone 5 still has a black screen when it is off. Why would you think that Apple would magically make a tv with a screen that was white when it was turned off?

Well If you want a white screen for TV you might as well get a projector and a white screen.

I'm such a luddite. When OP was talking about a "phone" and "white when off"

i was thinking this:

cordless-telephone-ge-intact2.jpg

I'm like, what are you talking about? That thing is always white!

Of course, this is what Boomer had in mind:

Which is why they make iPhones, iPods, and MacBooks have white displays?
