Why exactly is that?

Because it's not about you. Enough said.

If not wanting to spend obscene amounts of money on diamonds for a girl makes me "clueless", then I am perfectly fine with that. :)

doesn't mean they can't gripe about it! personally, i don't see why people don't just boycott debeers and buy non-debeers diamonds

$4+ for an engagement ring? Geez, I only paid $1500 for the rock on my fiancee's finger. :)

What an idiot. My fiance set a limit on the size diamond I could buy her, because if it's too big it looks TACKY. Especially if you're an idiot and thing size is the most important factor. It's not. It's probably the LEAST important. What would you rather have, a small diamond that sparkles brilliantly, or a big dull diamond? Might as well just get a CZ if you get a big dull diamond.

My fiance also set a limit on how much I could spend on her diamond, because she's looking forward to buying our first home when we get married. I didn't mind, her limit was well below the "2 months salary" that they say you're supposed to spend. But then she's not materialistic, and she doesn't believe that the amount of money I spend on her ring is any indication of how much I love her. I guess I got a rare one.

DeBeers doesn't have anything to do with your local Diamond Hut. Until recently they
controlled everything to do with the purchase of diamonds at the uncut level. They
would and could muscle out any other players trying to compete in the biz by threatening
Diamond buyers with being cut off entirely. You don't control a market like this by being
the good guys. Slavery, death, destruction all follow closely in the wake of their biz.

I don't have the article, facts and figures in front of me, but as of the late 90's they lost
their complete stranglehold over the diamond market. They still are a major player
though.

Diamonds = teh evil, unless you go dig up your own.

Their was a great NOVA special in the 90's on Diamonds and DeBeers.

yeah, sure thats correct, but what about once you have a house? If your wife likes them, why not get her them? Many will spend thousands on computers and computer parts, etc, so whats the difference?
God, i cannot stand these 'diamonds are the devil' threads

I think that's your reply, but I'm not positive. Why not buy diamonds? Look up "conflict diamonds."

I've got several links discussing conflict diamonds. Let me know if you want them. They're the reason I don't/won't buy diamonds.

Canadian polar bear diamonds :)
De Beers is big into the Canadian diamond scene.

Are you saying none of the goods you own are manufactured in less than ideal conditions? Things are cheap because of poor working conditions in those places.

Hi Lola,
Like others have said, most diamonds are sold by DeBeers who have artificially inflated the market, and concocted the marketing campaign that tells women that men can ONLY get you a diamond or he doesn't love you. Whatever happened to choices? Because of this false mentality, it doesn't leave men with any choice whatsoever. It's diamond or bust in her mind, and I shouldn't have to feel forced to get her anything to prove my love.
