Also I think monitoring would be a good idea in general, but 7 to 10 hours is not enough time to evacuate the entire EAST COAST. So unless the monitoring could give a few days notice there is not much you can do about it. Just think of how long it takes people to evacuate when there is a hurricane.

You also will note that eruptions occur every 25 to 200 years and the last was in 1949. Slippage has begun.
Monitoring Mt. St. Helens has given accurate predictions regarding eruptions. It should be the same here. If an impending major eruption is detected then plans already formulated (which seem to be missing so far) could be put into effect.
I believe the "few thousand year" reference is best, otherwise the author wouldn't be worring so much.

That's something that I've been worrying about after seeing the South Asian tsunami -- can a tsunami hit the eastern US (Maryland)? I kind of live near the water.

In this particular scenario, the chances that you and everything you know would be gone are high.
7 to 10 hours is plenty of time to get people off of the beaches, out of the streets, and into higher floor buildings and higher ground...we aren't talking about the waves that hit in the movie "Deep Impact", we are talking about waves that would be very similar to the waves from the earthquake in the Indian Ocean a few days ago

What we need to do is launch a pre-emptive strike agains this terrorist volcano. If we nuke it now we might be able to prevent its fascist lavas from reaching our land.
It is a vast conspiracy by the right to wipe out the blue populations!
On a more serious note we do what we can. There is a threat much larger than a volcano but we dont spend much money on it. Astroids, Comets, or Meteors can wipe out the entire planet.

So you are for pulling out of Iraq since it poses a lower potential danger than this, and you write off something so easily monitored as worthless. OK.
First we aren't doing what we can do. That is the entire point of the article.
Second. WE ARE doing something about asteroids and such. We have an ongoing project to catalog.
Third, maybe we can't kill it, and that makes it "unsexy" to some, but we can buy more time to evacuate people from potentially affected areas.
Fourth, as a nation affected by such an event we are idiots to ignore it. Blame the US? Well if the shoe fits, wear it. Guess what? If you let your kids play in traffic, and they get run over I'd blame you too. When (not if) this happens and we have millions of deaths more than necessary then we HAVE earned the destruction by sheer idiocy.
Maybe it would be helpful for people to DO something than play games with it.

Opening scene: scientists (3 old people, one new guy, one hottie) observing the volcano discover rise in pressure, try to warn everybody, no one listens. Running around, new guy pathetic attempt to hit on hottie, strike 1.
Volcano blows, cue CGI effects. Canarie islands gets wiped out. Cue interest by US military, then word gets to US president. Cabinet meeting, meeting with scientists, evacuation of entire East Coast begins, not enough time, more time must be bought. Cue family(2 parents 3 small children including baby) getting order to evacuate.
Conclusion: set off a nuclear device in the Atlantic Ocean ahead of the wave front to dull the effects.
After debate only one location set for nuclear device to blunt waves, but there are problems:
1. nuclear device will cause a small 10-20 ft Tsunami that will kill some people. Cue Tsunami hitting North Africa and wiping everyone out.
2. US submarine in area about to nuke, they can't get out in time. Cue sad scene with Mr. President telling submariners "you are making a great sacrifice" Captain breaks out his cigars and orders a last ditch effort to get out of the blast zone.
Device set up, preparations set, scientists sent to observe. Running around, new guy pathetic attempt to hit on hottie, strike 2. Nuke goes off. Scene at sub getting hit by blast, darkness, shouting, switch to CGI of impact against incoming big wave, switch to family stuck trying to get out of East Coast. 10-20 ft Tsunami comes rushing in. Lots of deaths still. Bravery of family saving each other.
Real Tsunami finally hits, but much smaller now. Not much damage. Scientists find missing submarine. Attempt rescue operation. Rescue operation success. new guy pathetic attempt to hit on hottie, Home Run! The End.

If you think not killing terrorists has lower potential risk than a Volcano that may erupt in 2000 years. Your opinion is hilarious.

rotflmao at tops they can scan and track 1% of the objects floating around out there. I am surprised you arent out all worried about that.
I think it would be a good idea to have a warning system. But to think we need to pull out of iraq and cancel the war on terror to do it is foolish thinking.

7 to 10 hours enough time? Only in theory. In reality, many would not hear about it or get out in time -- just wouldn't happen 100% smoothly and you should know that.
Think of the Outer Banks. One big traffic accident on any part ot the 17 mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel and everyone would be piped. Want to talk about that endless two lane road out of the Florida Keys? Didn't think so.
